After having zero luck finding 7.62x25 HP rounds actually in-stock any where, I opted for the slightly less powerful but still compatible 7.63x25 Mauser (aka ".30 Mauser") ammunition (yes, it's safe to fire in guns chambered for the 7.62 tok round but not vice versa).

After looking around at various options, I decided to buy a box of 25 Hornady brand .30 Mauser rounds in JSP (semi-jacketed lead Soft Point) from AmmunitionToGo.com. The price seemed decent and they seem to be splashed across a lot of sites and search engines.

Well, eventually the product arrived. It took about a week longer than I expected for UPS Ground and I paid almost 50% more than "list price" when you include shipping ($19 + $8.50 S&H), but at least I had compatible ammunition at least a month earlier than if I'd gotten in line for the back ordered Wolf Gold JHP 7.62x25 Tok.

Things went from ho-hum to uncomfortable when I examined the cartridges. At the case mouth, running parallel to the length, were small cracks in 18 of the 25 cartridges.
[see images]

Naturally, I wasn't comfortable with this so I emailed AmmunitionToGo with the issue, asking for a simple exchange. I ordered the product I wanted and didn't want anything special, just that exact product.

After having to email them twice to get their attention they finally started to correspond. The end result was AmmunitionToGo offered to give me "Store Credit" on the original purchase price of $19 (not including S&H) if I were to ship the defective product back to them. OK, so, I paid $9 extra to ship the defective product out to me in the first place, now they want me to spend an extra $9 to ship it back to them so that I can have a "store credit" equall what I would have spent by that point in shipping alone so that the next time I buy something from them I can spend another $9 in further shipping and be in almost $50 into my $20 purchase of 25 rounds.

$2 per round? Gee, thanks AmmunitionToGo.

So I call Hornady. First, let me say that Hornady's customer line is vastly amusing. Even if you have no problems at all, I recommend calling their customer support line just to laugh at the pre-recorded messages. Phone: 1-800-338-3220. No. Seriously. Try it. I was in a good mood before I even got a live person. Once I finally got a live person, I was advised that this ammo had been custom loaded under contract by Graf & Sons. I was given their customer support number and off I went to Door Number Three.

So I waited on hold at Graf, got a live person who couldn't help me but promised very convincingly to have the person who could do so call me back very quickly. In this case that very quickly was the next day. Unfortunately, I'd worked late and didn't get the message until 7 or so. So, today, during my lunch break, I returned the call. Well, it turns out that Graf is aware of this problem. They offered an alternate product (FMJ) but I want expanding ammo, not FMJ. If I'd wanted FMJ, I could have just stuck with the 7.62 Tok stuff I've already got! Further, I learned that, because they are aware of the problem that the product is being sold as "Factory Seconds." Hmmm... Factory Seconds? So I had them confer with their techs who positively assured me that it is safe to fire this ammo but that it would not be reloadable. I'm still a bit twitchy about shooting it, but Graf swears to me (no, really, I'm not kidding) that they wouldn't sell ammo that wasn't safe to shoot.

Let's go back to this "Factory Seconds" thing. No where, and I do mean NO WHERE, on www.ammunitiontogo.com/catalog1/pro...y-86gr-soft-point-round-nose-ammo+7.63+mauser+hornady&cd=1&hl=en&ct =clnk&gl=us&client=firefox-a]AmmunitionToGo.com product page for the .30 Mauser ammo[/url] was it described as "Factory Seconds" or I wouldn't have bought it.

Conclusion:
Graf & Sons is OK and seemed willing to work with their customers.

Hornady is helpful, polite, and their automated phone system rocks.

AmmuntionToGo.com is only willing to do the minimum required for people who buy stuff from them (folks other businesses would call "Customers"). Don't do business with them. There are plenty of alternatives.

I have never seen a store that allows you to return ammunition.  "All ammunition sales final - no returns" is what I see in all my local stores.  I understand the reasoning for these policies, but I would not be in a good mood if I received defective ammunition.  But it's questionable if yours is actually defective, per Graf's words.  This is something that I would expect to deal with Graf about.  If no resolution from Graf, then Hornady.  Actually, I would have expected Hornady to take responsibility from the start, not push you off to Graf.  Since it was Hornady that farmed out the manufacture to Graf in the first place.  I don't see AmmunitionToGo as being the bad guy here, UNLESS they were informed and knew that this was second quality ammunition and intentionally failed to label it that way on their website.  Graf says they are selling this as seconds.  But were they back when they sold it to Hornady?  Did Graf inform Hornady that it was seconds?  Did Hornady inform AmmunitionToGo that it was seconds?  I would be mad if I were in your situation.  But I can't say for sure that AmmunitionToGo is the bad guy.  Did you recontact AmmunitionToGo after talking with Hornady and Graf and ask them if they knew and were intentionally selling second quality ammunition?  If AmmunitionToGo was duped, then they may be more willing to take up your side if you inform them.  Were the boxes the ammo came in marked "seconds"?  They should have been if what Graf is saying is true.  You don't sell seconds without marking them as such.

If you paid by credit card, contact your card issuer and ask them to execute a "charge back".  They may require you to notify AmunitionToGo in writing of the problem while cc'ing your CC issuer.  If AmmunitionToGo fails to respond to the CC issuers liking, they will reverse the charges and you will have paid nothing.  You might have to hold the bad ammo for a week or so for AmmunitionToGo to come pick it up (at their expense).  After that you can dispose of it as you see fit.  That's the way charge backs have worked for my family in the past.  The paperwork is a bit of a pain, but not too bad.  Companies often change their tune when faced with a threatened charge back.  Depends on how much the purchase is worth.

I want to be clear here. I'm not trying to say that what AmmunitionToGo did was illegal. It's just their idea of "Customer Service" sucks mightily. On a simple exchange for an identical product, they want me to suck up shipping both directions. In essence to pay shipping for the same product three times (once to me, once back to them, and once again to me). As I said above, this would push the end price of a $20 box of ammo up to the $50 range. (Graf is selling the "Factory Seconds" for $9 on their website with $4 S&H.)

This counts as bad customer service and I will not do business with them ever again and am recommending everyone else avoid the headache as well. There are plenty of other places that have good customer service that won't take advantage of you.

I have bought a lot of ammo from ATG and had one opportunity to deal with their customer service. Service was fine - it involved an exchange for wrong items sent, they sent me the right stuff and paid for me to ship the wrong items back. This was last fall some time. I have found their prices to be reasonable and their shipping is no worse than anyone else's.

On the other hand, I will never buy from CTD again because of their price gouging last year. While many vendors kept their prices as reasonable as they could, CTD jacked theirs way up to take advantage of shooters during the ammo shortage.

Agreed!  Cheaper than Dirt are DIRTBAGS.  They are not friends of the gun community but are price-gouging crooks.  What were they getting, $70 for a box of 380 FMJ? Also, they will sell your personal information. That is a given.  SCREW CTD!  >:(

AmmunitionToGo had OK customer service when I needed it. They sent 2 boxes of Fiocchi .38 Special 125gr JSP instead of .357 Magnum 125gr SJHP. It took a few days to get a response, but they eventually just shipped me the right stuff and let me keep the wrong ammo. OK in my book.

I believe this actually was $10 higher at one point.

I have ordered from ATG several times, but never had problems. so I can't speak for their customer service. Never have ordered from ammoman. But have ordered from sgammo.com they are a little cheaper, $5-20 per thousand and their shipping is cheaper. 1000 rounds of 7.62x39 is $22 shipping, ATG is $35-40 for shipping. Can't speak for sgammo's customer service, never had to use it.

Ammoman has 147 grain golddot for $299 shipped, sgammo has it for $229 plus $14 shipping. That's over $50 cheaper.

I've only had one order from ATG, but it was a doozy. 1k of .308 plus some 12gauge. I was very happy with the service, and the prices.

That said, a small order of ammo through mail order doesn't make much sense to me. Shipping is going to be expensive, and unless you've already shot some of that ammo, you can't really believe that it'll work perfect in your gun.

For those of you that are looking for reasonable .308 play ammo. I've been very happy the the ATI .308 turkish stuff. No problems in my FNAR and the brass is re-loadable. Easy to keep groups inside of 2 moa, challenging to keep inside of 1 moa.

I got semi-local commercial reload .308 168gr Match BTHP's or similar prices to the ATI stuff  ...ammo like 308 you definitely save quite a bit by buying in bulk! I don't shoot a ton of .308, but I also don't want to pay $1 a round!

I have a CZ-52. I have had no problems with ATG or ammoman.com on previous orders. I have not used Reeds ammo, but it is where I was going to order HP rounds if I got a 7.62x25 AR-15 upper.

Decent prices on HP rounds.  They have good reviews, but I've never personally bought/shot their ammo.
Reeds has an excellent reputation.

I fully expect to eventually get the ammunition I ordered. My only complaint with them is that they seem to be a bit vague about "when" and haven't been particularly communicative on the issue. This doesn't count as a "big deal" to me but it would be nice if they'd have told me, "we are hoping to get the order fulfilled by XX/XX/XXXX."

ATG has been a good source of 32 ACP for me. And far as CTD, if you really want to put the screws to them then shop their bargain bin/loss leaders. They'll most likely lose money on most of the lowest-cost products they sometimes blow out.

For example, the soft-sided case I got for my S2K; I found the manufacturer here in China, and the 1000 piece cost FOB China was $4.91; CTD was selling it for $6.99. Knowing the duties and shipping costs, they're paying $6.80 to get them to their front door, and with labor and warehousing costs, they're losing money on each one they sell, but count on that "freebie" to get you to buy more.

So put the screws to them and buy products they only lose money on!

I have always had good service and products from ammunitiontogo. At one point they were the only place that I could find Colt .45s.

personaly i like CTD, they may not have the best prices on everythig but its still a heck of allot cheaper thans any guns store near me. have you seen the ammo prices at dick's sporting good? they want exactly one arm and one leg for a box of .223rem.

personally i have allot of sites that i shop from for different things, and i find one of the best sites to go is to (Gasp) amazon.com they have everything from magazines to AR15 uppers, the prices look high but with shipping it acturally is cheaper than most other sites. i bought a carbine sized gun case for $30 on amazon while the same type on CTD was $75 and at my LGS is was $90

ATG is a good place to get hard to find LE ammo for a good price. I just ordered a box of GDHP 147 gr. $22.95/50 and Ranger T 147 gr. $24.95/50. While the shipping is a little high, you can make it up in volume. The orders arrive quickly, and if you are an Illinois resident, you don't have to send them a copy of your FOID! I have nothing negative to say about those folks.

I've yet to have a problem with the 7.62x25 rounds with cracks in the casings. I bought mine from Century Arms directly. 1260 rounds for about $90.
I expect the possibility of cracks in cases in surplus target ammo. Not in NIB ammo. I might have had an easier time accepting that, even then, if they had been marked "factory seconds" or the like.

I bought hornady directly from them a few months before obama was elected. I knew what was coming and got a box of defense ammo for all my pistols (45, 44 mag, 9mm, 40sw, 9 mak, 38 sp, 357, and some others --- it was a large order).

It took some time due to the lack of makarov ammo (they said they only run it twice a year due to low demand, so it took 3 months for my order to come along).

Their service was very good, and helpful. Since then, however, I think they are behind in production due to the shortage and unwilling to sell directly to the public. My understanding is that they will resume direct sales eventually, and they may have already done so --- if you want their ammo, try calling them first and bypassing all these middlemen.
