The Kosher salt does work, especially at close range, but I am using regular table salt at the moment. I had several instances where it seemed to work better on actual bugs at longer ranges. My Kosher salt is not as regular as the table salt. There is much more variation in crystal size, and many of the crystals look more like flakes than little cubes, which is what salt crystals are supposed to look like. On the other hand, the Kosher salt is great for cleaning cast iron cookware (another recent thread.) I think the issue with the Kosher salt I have is aerodynamic. I also need to mod my units, particularly opening up the orange muzzle tip to reduce shot pattern interference.
... It's a lot more fun than a fly swatter. :)

I was amazed at the difference in aerodynamics of the different media when I did the foil pattern tests in post #34. The mostly round 'shot' of the table salt didn't spread out nearly as much as the garnet and al-ox with flat sides. The Kosher is probably similar. The table salt had about the same pattern at about twice the range.

But the sharp crystals of the others flew thru the foil like a knife instead of just using blunt-force

We just need a metal loader

bug beam is in, on and zero'd! i'll get some pics up here in the next few days. most likely after the holiday.

with the bug beam i don't even use the sights (except for mid air shots which are rare) seems much faster and more fun. :)

Oh man... I came to this forum to learn more community feedback on a Kel-Tec rifle I bought, but there is some funny stuff here! Blake - do you think diatomaceous earth would be too powdery and weird to use? It absolutely wrecks bugs and gets in the crevices of their exoskeletons, is non-toxic to humans, and if another bug crosses through the residue it'll mess them up as well. Might be a fun load to take outside and shoot bugs around the perimeter of the house, with secondary benefits of damaging other bugs who find it later. Obviously it's easier to just dump it along the perimeter... but it sounds pretty fun to shoot some pests with a red dot!

Oh, Outstanding! Ammo with a chemical-weapons twist, I Liiiike it!
Not sure what it's density is but we can find out. The BAS uses mostly blunt-force impact to effect a 'kill' but this would be an interesting media to research. Especially for "big game" that are wearing armor.

It's certainly cheap and not nearly as abrasive as blast media.
Not sure how powdery it is but it has to get into the loader. The shaking of the gun when the pump is cycled gets table salt into the loader with no problem.

Test it and let us know!
(I just know you can't be going thru life with a flimsy fly-swatter when there is a 'gun alternative' available:D)

I was looking around and found a number of companies producing spherical ceramics with diameters in the 0.3-0.4mm range. I didn’t look at density... but that may solve the abrasion/leakage issues and should improve pattern (aerodynamics).

Could get slightly bigger beads if leakage is an issue (think buck shot) :)

Another good suggestion.
Need to compare it's density to that of table salt. The problem with the other ammo isn't so much leakage, the heavier (higher density) media is an abrasive and chews into and jams the soft plastic of the loader:

...But when it does shoot, it tears bugs a new one

Two (maybe more) ways to avoid abrasion: shoot a softer material, or choose a geometry that will not be abrasive. Silicon Carbide is spherical - super hard and used as ball bearings. Table salt is (according to wikipedia) ≈ 0.3mm and 2.16 g/cm^3 density. If one used Silicon Carbide (3.15g/cm^3) and can be purchased online in 0.4,,. 0.5mm, ...

Added benefit... the spherical shape will hold a tighter pattern than a crystalline shape.

Maybe?

Maybe?
:D Looks just like miniature #12 shot!
Probably be perfect for outdoors.
I hadn't thought about bead-blast media since most use glass beads.
But then there is the media used for shot-peening to harden metal.
That's probably what this media is for.
Can you buy less than 10 lbs at a time? Where can you get it?
If it holds a really tight pattern it may not need to be so dense.

China from what I can tell. I searched for "ceramic bearings 0.3 0.4mm" and found a slew of sites. Here are a couple:
https://www.lily-bearing.com/ceramic-bearings/loose-ceramic-balls/

https://www.made-in-china.com/products-search/hot-china-products/Zirconia_Ceramic_Ball.html

Intuitively, the diameter will matter. Needs to be small enough to feed but big enough not to fit inside the tolerances between the plastic pieces. Since the bearings will be too hard to pulverize (like salt), it could jam the mechanism. BBs are 4.5 mm - could imagine a "buck shot" load with something like 1mm bearings for hunting "la cucaracha!"

I believe the smooth balls would not jam the loader at all.
I'm loving the SDensity of 6 for the Zirconia Oxide balls.
There could be a small problem with a minimum order though...

I have dealt with the Chinese before and they will bend over backwards to send you a "sample". Say, oh a couple pounds?:D You only pay for shipping so they can tell that you have more than one dollars.

Yeah, but these people will think nothing of sending you a 'free sample' (a Kg, 2.2 lbs) for :quote:evaluation:quote:.
You just have to give them a really good address like:

Your Real Name, Process Engineer- New Products.
Genius Metal Solutions, Inc.
510 Anyway Drive, NE <your home address
Pittsburgh PA, 70612 <your home state
Attn: Prototype development laboratory.

Send 'em a few bux paypal and it will be on your front porch in no time.

(not that I've ever done anything like this, but it works really good:D)

here are some pics with the bug beam installed. zero'd easily and seems to hold it's zero so far. as an added bonus- last pic- seems to center guns plastic tip so drilling it out may not have been needed. just something i noticed.

Thank you so much!
...and ordered:D.
I got the Bug-Beam installed on the L&G (AKA: Grit-slinga) thanks to @randybill.

Let's face it, the factory sights on the BAS are useless and you are left just 'pointing' at your target and hoping.
This changes everything.
Since it's a scattergun, you don't need pinpoint accuracy but you do need to know where the center of the pattern will land. This is where the bulk of the energy is.
Of course due to the close range and the .8" distance of the beam from the bore axis of the gun, you will have to have a "hold-under" due to parallax. Here's the garnet blasting the foil target:

Being able to accurately aim it doesn't seem very important until you look at the penetration, backlit:

I'm not going to miss anymore:drwho:.

Uh, Bug A Salt sells flies on their web site.
Its not hard attracting flies if you really want to.
If you really need flies,
Get a dog or borrow one for the back yard.
Or, um, you know what to do.
