Before I reply to anyone's posts, allow me to send my deepest sympathies to all those who have friends and/or relatives in the areas affected by the recent earthquake and tsunami. I, myself, have a nephew in the Navy stationed in Japan; I have not been able to contact him since the disasters occurred. Hopefully, he was aboard ship and out of the areas.

bobkt,

I agree that MajorPandemic's rear sight solution is very interesting. With a little more refinement, it would probably prove to be a real asset to the Sub2000's accuracy. It could also become a highly profitable aftermarket accessory.

Personally, I do not like the look of the Blue Force Gear front sight; that does not mean, however, that it is not an excellent replacement sight. I get the impression that it has a loyal following and is highly sought after, new or used, which must account for something. I simply like the look of the HiPoint 995 front sight more, myself. So, to each their own...

And as for interest? I have no doubt that at least some readers are looking at your rifle and saying to themselves, "I can do that". And why would they not? With a bipod, a sight, a grip and a light (Ha! It rhymed! *:D) you have added most of the accessories most people add to their own rifles.

Very nice pictures! I especially like the third from the top, which shows the rifle folded and locked with the scope still on it! My compliments to Red Lion Precision, LLC; so far, their forend has lived up to expectations.

I don't know why, but that scope looks perfectly at home sitting above your rifle. By the way, edit the Walmart.com link. You repeated the http and it doesn't work without cutting it short.

What brand/model bipod did you mount? Those stubby legs seem very sturdy.

I look forward to seeing your rifle in its final form, once you have all the rest of your accessories firmly mounted.

Good luck.

kwikrnuwife,

The contrast between the hard chrome parts of the rifle and the black of the new forend make your rifle very pleasing to the eye; the high capacity magazines make it sing to the heart!

Tell us the truth, now... are all of those magazines actually loaded with live rounds or are they filled with empty casings? ;) If they are live, then let me say this: yours is the largest collection of live ammunition I have seen in one place since I left the service! And to think that sooner or later you will get to fire all of those rounds... I envy you.

How do you like the forend? It is, after all, the topic of this thread. Has it retained zero as it is promised to do?

I see that you have mounted only one accessory, although your forend has at least two rails. Is something else in the works?

I anxiously await further news about your silencer project. What a coincidence that the silencer fixed barrel mount fits so snugly!

Oh, one more thing: does your converted Glock 32 also use a silencer? I ask because it is threaded.

-------

maswell,

That is a very good looking flip-up sight. If you mount it on the Sub2000, let us know how it holds up.

Tron1,

I corrected the link for the Walmart sight, and added other details for the foldable foregrip, flashlight and the UTG bipod.

Today I received more rails from Red Lion and will be able to mount them.

Thanks,

Bobkt

Bobkt I'm going to recommend you zero that scope/sight at 50 yds to allow for the additional height from the barrel. That should put you dead on at 50 and slightly low at shorter and longer ranges. If you try to zero it closer you'll be shooting way high at 50 and 100. Just an observation.

Thanks a lot, you know this is my weakest point! But I am going to get it zero!

I am loving this Red Lion Forend.

Thanks,

He hasn't had a chance to fire it. I put the forend on this morning for him and it has three of the long rails on it.

It is all subsonic 9mm hollow points and all of the mags are loaded with 31 live rounds each.

I have been considering a utg #416m quad rail with Spike's Tactical SD-2 Fake Can.  The can seems to fit securely in the end of the utg rail and and quad rail help secure the can.  My question is, if I went with the RL forend, will the sd2 can fit inside the front of the forend? Of course, this would be removing the endcap and possibly tapping the can to insert the same mounting screw that mounts the endcap, if thats possible.  I am not really sure of the OD of the sd2 can, can anyone enlighten me?  If these 2 will work with each other, this is definitely the forend that I am going with.  Thanks for any help in advance.

The screws and nuts that hold the rail to the forend stick into the inside of the forend. To put the fixed barrel adapter into the forend I had to remove the three screws and nuts which hold the rails on, but each of the long rails has 4 screws, so it probably isn't a problem.

Thanks Bobkt

It was an honor and priviledge, not to mention some of the best years of my life, especially being stationed in Alaska.

(Sorry for the OT) It was a hell of a ride, still get tickles a couple times a day.  Hope you raise your nephew soon.  Incoming calls were hard and many cell towers are out but it's getting better.  Internet comms may be the best as I've not had trouble with those even with spotty phone service.

Where are you? I was stationed at Camp Zama over there twice at each end of the 80's. I got familiar with Yokota, Atsugi, and Yokosuka while we were there. Yes the tremors were interesting back then but I think the worst we had was a mid 5. Nothing compared to this one.

Tron I'm sure your nephew is fine but hope you hear from him soon. They announced yesterday that all US military personnel had been accounted for. ;)

bobkt,

Thank you. I served out of need (I needed a job), but it turned into a vocation. I found my true self when I became a soldier, using firm discipline softened with respect and kindness to mold a generation of soldiers. And no, my fellow Drill Sergeants did not like me much; I was too "soft". :)

So what is new with your forend? Is your camera busted? ;)

-------

Lunal_Tic,

I am glad you are safe. My best wishes to all who are there. Unfortunately, my nephew is one of the few people left on the planet who lives without internet service! :D

Are you considering the Red Lion forend?

-------

3wbdriver,

I pray that you are correct, and that he, along with all of our other servicemembers are safe. The news reports paint a bleak picture: a country in ruins. The country can be rebuilt; the Japanese are a strong people. I can only hope that the victims and casualties can be attended to quickly.

On a brighter note: What is your initial impression of the forend, based on the partial reviews we have seen?

bobkt,

I saw that your camera is not busted! ;) Good pictures in the "Re: Sub 2k..CASE??? Who has a hard case? Soft case" thread (Reply #27).

By the way, my wife's 11-year old nephew saw your rifle, with the scope and the rest, and said, "That gun looks sexy!"

(Her sister will be taking him to counseling on Monday. *:D)

-------

Well, everyone, I finally received word from my nephew: he was in his apartment on land; he felt the earthquake, but was not in the direct path of the tsunami.

Thank you all for your words of encouragement.

Tron1

PS: We now return you to your regular, scheduled program. :p

Tron1,

I will have newer pictures to show the 3 Red Lion Precisions (RLP) rails that I installed this morning.

In the future I will be comparing the following three sight systems:
  • The Walmart CenterPoint 1x34mm Quick Aim Sight with its red and green dot sighting system,
  • The AIM Tactical 4 Reticle Holographic Red Dot Sight, and
  • finally some modified version of the backup sight. I do prefer a metal based solution rather than the cute Keltec plastic

Imagine this for a minute... Lockable: yes; Elevation Control only, Picatinny rail: sure, add other features!

Ok, I was really busy posting pictures in:

3wbdriver - I've started a new thread about the quake to avoid taking this one further off purpose.

Tron1 - Yes I'm thinking about the RL but I'm trying to figure out how to fold it 180 degrees to avoid making a 2d package into a 3d one (i.e. I still want the package to lay flat in a case)  I was thinking that if there was a rail forward of the RL that was extremely close to the barrel I might put a small forward grip or something like the Surefire X400 on it without having to take it off when folded.  I'd rather just fold and go rather than be fiddling around sliding on accessories.

Imagine a front sight with a picatinny rail at the bottom. Then this green laser would be mounted closer to the muzzle end, could it not?

Thank you for the pics Bobkt That is very close to the look and functionality set up I am looking for. I was hoping my red lion forend would arrive Saturday but Alas I will have to wait until Monday. I am also trying to figure out an AR iron sight system as a back up but I think I will have to wait until the forend arrives. I would apreciate any input from others. I also need a replacement aluminum piece that was between the front sight and barrel. Pics Pics and more Pics.
