PMR-30 rear fiber optics coming loose

Anyone know how to stop the light pipes from backing out. One was almost fully out before I noticed it.
I kept pushing them back in. Do they need to be glued in?

I was considering super gluing mine in, as my rear site (left side) did the exact same thing - just started backing out after the first 3 clips went through the gun.

But...once glued in with super glue, it'll be very difficult to get it back out should it need replacing.

I watched a video once where they used a flame (lighter) to melt the end of the fibre optic to "lock it in place...BUT, in this example it was installed in an open ended sight and melted down on each end to lock it in place - not sure we can do that as the front end of the rear sight is fully enclosed. :(

So this left me wondering if a dab of blue Loctite might work...

...or finding a tiny circlip to try clamping over the fibre optic itself just inside the sight to keep it from backing out.

Blue Loctite only works if there is no air. This is why it works on threads. It might work but I do have some clear glue used in plumbing.
A tiny dab of that and those will be all but impossible to remove, but not as bad as super glue.
I was hoping the factory had a fix but looks like clear glue and then hope the rear sights never break.

I did some searching and it looks there has been quite a few post around the web about using super glue.. I will have to watch the sites when I shoot this weekend.
Just keep in mind guys, that fibre optics can crack in the middle. When that happens, it'll be very hard to clean the super glued end out enough to fit a replacement. This is why super glue isn't something I've placed at the top of my list of fix ideas. Great short term, potentially a problem long term.

Another solution occurred to me last night:

  • Remove the rear sight.
  • Drill the mounting hole completely through to the front edge of the sight, so the fibre optic can pass all the way through, front of sight to rear of sight.
  • Add in a new, longer piece of fibre optic and melt the ends to lock it in place.

Bit more work, and somewhat permanent as a fix, but the part is also pretty cheap from KelTec - $21.36 gets you the whole slide cover, with, it appears, the sight mount integrated. Wonder if, for a few bucks more, they might see their way to drilling the hole out prior to shipping. That'd be worth it, IMO.

Can't believe this didn't occur to me before!!!

Just add a tiny drop of glue (hot glue would work) to the fibre optic just ahead of any of the support loops in the sight. The mass of the fibre optic is so low that even a low strength glue should work, and it'll act as a physical stop to keep the fibre in place. If it breaks, it's super easy to pry/peel/snap the glue off to remove the broken fibre rod. :)

When I was ordering my spare parts and repair kit I got the slide cover. It came in black back then so it won't match my OD green but it will work if ever needed.

When I called Kel-Tec again today they told me they basically use a type of superglue and to apply it to the front of the fiber optic. Then push it in from the back (the part you look at when aiming and it should hold just fine. The is apparently a common problem with the PMR-30.
So I went to the hobby store and bought these flexible tips that fit on the superglue bottle and make it so a very tiny amount of glue comes out. I got medium glue and not the super watery one.
seems to work just fine. If it loosens up again I'll just apply some more.

Solid idea with the hobby store applicator! :)

Hi All, I know this is late to the discussion, but may be relevant to you or new people searching. I got my PMR30 in 2016. Put about 10 mags through it and the rear fiber optic started backing out. The help at Keltec said this was redesigned to use allen screw set screws. They're sending me a "Kit" but I don't know if it includes a dust cover. As I was looking at mine I figured a simple solution: soften the fiberoptic with a small flame, as little as possible just so you can bend it slightly, to have a curve in it. I put an S shape in mine and reinserted it. It is much tighter. I'll have to shoot it and get back to you. This should work famously. Not sure why the folks at Keltec didn't think of this. This is what I do... reinvent the wheel and make ideas better. :)

Regards,

Mike
