My PLR-22 Review

Here is my review on the Kel Tec PLR-22.
It comes standard with iron sights and 1mag.

I installed the forend, its the same one that fits its older brother the PLR-16.
I also added a slingle point sling and the EOTECH.

I initially tried shooting it with the iron sights and I must say even though I could hit paper the groups were pretty wide spread.  After adding the EOTECH I could hit the bull each and everytime.  I was shooting at about 50ft at an indoor range.  So I definetly suggest adding some type of optics.

I shot Federal, CCI Mini Mags, and Subsonics.  I had a bit of a problem with the subsonics, however everything else functioned.

Another plus is that the barrel is already threaded so adding a muzzle brake or supressor wont be a problem.  

Overall I am happy with the PLR-22 so far, you definetly need to buy more mags-(it gets pretty old reloading 1 mag).

The forend also sports a standard rail to add lasers, lights, bipods whatever the shooter might want.  Just be sure not to add a vertical grip without the proper tax stamp!

Breakdown for cleaning is simple and overall its pretty light.
It is a very fun gun to shoot and it wont break the bank!  :D

I got to shoot a PLR-22 today and loved it. It is much lighter than the PLR-16 and much quieter too! ;D ;D My 10 yr old son decided I should get him one........right away! :) I would love to get one too, oneday. I loved how light and easy to handle it was over the PLR's I had shot before. I ran smoothly on several different types of ammo we used, no problem. I likey!!! :) Thanks to TxCajun and TheFallGuy for the use of it today at the Bayou Blast.

Nice PLR-22 videos! Thanks!

The shooting video in particular made me want the PLR-22 more than just seeing pictures and reading the specs.

I have a KTOG buddy with the Ruger Charger, and it's a great little bench rest .22 pistol. I'd like to put the PLR-22 up against it and see how well each does at 50 yards.

Are you sure you weren't looking at the PLR-16? They usually sell for $500 to $600 depending on how they're equipped and how much markup the dealer is trying to make (quite a bit lately).

The PLR-16 was the original .223 version, and the .22LR PLR-22 was just introduced this past year.

Maybe THE DEALER thinks it's a PLR-16! :)

No, I afraid that's not the case. The big selling point to me was that it's a 22, because he knows I've been loving my gsg 5, and my Dad's old Marlin golden mountie.
I'm going back there today to see what he's thinking. I pretty sure he's hoping for just a quick "better buy this gun now while I can" response.
I will usually pay more for the customer service aspect, but there is zero customer service there so it's internet order for me.

The EOTech has a small 1MOA dot. It's very precise and quite accurate. For the type of close range shooting you'll probably do with a PLR-22, the 1X EOTech should be fine. I think the magnifiers work best for longer distances. Maybe you want the fast acquisition of a holographic sight but sometimes need a little magnification to accurately aim at more distant targets? The obvious downside to the magnifier is the cost. The other down side is the way it makes it more difficult to rapidly acquire a target and shoot with both eyes open. Magnifying one eye's image confuses the brain. With just the EOTech, the brain easily integrates the images from both eyes. You get binocular vision and it looks like the red dot is on the target and both eyes are seeing it... until you close the eye that's looking through the EOTech and the dot disappears from the other eye.

If I wanted a magnified red dot, I think I'd be more inclined to get a low power scope with an illuminated reticle. I'm not saying there are no applications for a magnified EOTech, but I don't think the PLR-22 would be that application for me.



Thanks for the reminder. My EOTech 511 has been eating batteries. With the unit powered off, the batteries last maybe two or three months. There's something odd gong on. It looks like a leakage current. I just called EOTech and they've apparently "been having some problems with the battery caps". They're mailing me a new battery cap. From the problem I'm seeing, maybe there's a high resistance connection between the common terminal between the two batteries and the chassis ground. That would match what I'm seeing, with one of the first set of batteries leaking (Energizer) and the same battery from the second set (Duracell) showing a reverse polarity when fully discharged.
