My beloved P-17 has turned into a jam-o-matic

I started seeing these issues at the last range session. Kind of lived through it hoping it was me because of my stroke and grip. Yesterday working at the range, and really focused on all the fundamentals and was still having these issues. Clean the gun and make sure the chamber was clean, reduced the number of jams, but still occurred same mode. It feels like the extractor spring has or is weak. I don't know if it's an extractor spring issue. I would have the spent case trapped between a live round and the roof of the slide, and had to lock the slide to the rear, eject the magazine, and pry out the spent casing and the live round would fallout.

It might be crappy ammunition, Winchester bulk box. But I must restate I did not have the issue before, for all you guys that are going to come on here and say ammunition. So it's possible but not likely, or something that kept crappy ammo from being an issue is now worn out or sprung and crappy ammo is an issue.

Regardless I would really like to change out that weak spring off the extractor. I see that Kel-Tec doesn't offer that spring for sale, but I'm sure the hive mind would know which spring I could use to replace it.

Thanks in advance

Last night i was crusing through sime p17 videos. I came across one where the guy was discussing friction issues
So i did some hand polishing with very very good results. Oh i also realized i need to start cleaning this gun after each range session or at least before the next one.

Any way i polished the sides of the slide , under the slide , the opening of the slide that the barrel comes through and the top of frame. I also lightly polish the polymer edges along the frame thay.may come in contact with the slide. The metsl portion of the frame needed this baldy. I took both guns to the range and what do you know i only had two failure to extract. those rounds needed to be pushed out of chamber via cleaning rod. They only happen on one gun.

I am going to fillowing CMMG procedure of buzzing the chamber as it may help.

I think this week i will use a dremmel to give those areas a polish .

Great results with my old extractor springs and extractors.

I havent put the new extractor and spring in yet. I have two p17s so one will get new spring and other will get both new extractor and spring. I am going to polish wear points of trunion and slide with fliz and.my dremmel. First i just used a qtip or toothbrush handle wrapped with 1500 grit and fliz. It seemd to make a huge difference.

Wel both of mine are running like sewing machines again.

I am soo happy. I am no longer looking at other guns as long as these are running. The sig p322 looks very promising but the p17s weight the deciding factor for me. Plus i am a kel tec fan boy. These p17s are such a simple and effective design.

I think the most effective thing someone could do is a bit of polishing before shooting these.

Both if my p17s began to jam and double feed. One was horrible i couldnt get through a mag without every other round double feeding or caught sideways above the next round.

So naturally the first thing i did was put the mags back to original configuration. That helped a bit but not much.

Next i polished the portion of the extractor that rides inside the extractor groove. Again helped some but nothing dramatic.

I deep cleaned the guns and chambers with cleaning rod copper bore brush with strands of pure copper choreboy wrapped around it.

I called kel tec to get new extractor springs and extractors. Got them in a week.

I saw an old you tube vidoe where the author was talking about friction points.

So i looked at the slide and decided to polish where the slide had contacted the trunion.

While i was at it i noticed the sides of the slide were very rough.

So i took a square toothbrush handle wrapped it in 1500 sand paper and went to work. I used a jewerlers fine file to smooth out the sides of the slide. Then smoothed more with the 1500. I finished everything off by coating the 1500 with Flitz and did one more round of polishing.
Look at the sides of your slide and your trunions. ugh!!! One of mine has numerius gouges while the other maybe one.

I took the guns out to the range. one ran like a rapped ape with original extractor and spring.

The other still had double feeds but only 4 rounds out of 96 rounds.

I left the one gun thats running well with the parts it came with.

Next i installed the new extractor spring and still had a couple of double feeds.
I replaced the extractor with the new one and all 96 rounds went off smooth as silk.

I am going to track round count on each gun to see when and if they fail again.

I am going to go back to cleaning regiment every or every other range trip.

Oh yeah the firing pin spring creeping over retaining pin! That pin is friction fit and can be moved to keep spring in place.

I am not sure if i will go back to the extended mags just yet. I think i am going to run these stock for a while.

I'd probably blacken the slide for protection but everything is good info!!

Now these threads are why people (like me) that just bought a model of firearm should come into these forums and see what can be done to eliminate problems with a new gun that one may think a return to the manufacture is the only solution. A Fluff and Buff...can solve many problems. I have learned so far today the slide is not the greatest fit, and sanding the slide sides can make a huge difference, the rear sight screws can come loose and some blue lock-tite after adj may be required, ejector channel may need some polishing, check the firing pin protrusion. A few simple things to do that may change a poor review about a recent purchase into a stellar new firearm experience.

Three-hour drive, six hours round trip, at these gas prices? Call KelTec for a free return label.

Does KelTec send a shipping label for returns? Do they return it directly to you when repaired? Many people do not realize if you get your same serial number firearm returned, it does not have to be sent to a FFL, although some companies refuse to do this even though they know it is legal. I have argued and won a few and lost a few with various companies on this subject.
