Happened to think - have you checked with whoever is/was hosting the old site to see if they have a backup you could pull from?

Odds are good that they do back up their servers on a regular basis. Even if a month's messages weren't available, it would still be better than starting from zero.

You know, it does seem rather odd that there was no back-up. Usually in a case like this the server is back up and running in only minutes.

Hope that this was not a deliberate attempt to dump all, good and bad, by admin or by a rival board. In any case, the way that it is right now, it certainly has cleaned the slate.

Me being of a suspicious nature, it certainly does get my imagination running..........................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................!

Well, enough of that, now back to the little guns. ;)

The problem is that the database format of the old board
is completely different than the format of the new board.
There are many security holes in the software that ran the old
board and though I've plugged several (nd contributed
my fixes back to the developers), I don't have 300 hours to spend
    plugging ALL of the holes.
Unfortunately noone has written a conversion tool to convert a
VBulletin datase (the old script) to YaBB (the new script).
So yeah, I could get a database backup. But then what would I
do with it? Writing a conversion tool to use that databse with
this script is probably a $500 job that I can't do right now.
I could perhaps put the old board back up read only.

Please do! All those tips and help that was shared, at least if we can search and read that would be great.

    Thanks,
    Den

Plus, if you put the old board back up in read-only mode, we could divide it up and 'repost' the good stuff.

You know, take a thread on the old board, Select-All, Copy, start new topic on new board, Paste.

That should be a 'controlled' activity though, to avoid getting 47 copies of one thread and no copies of 23 others.

I'd seen a few conversion utilities to go from board to board, but not looked up this specific combination.....

    Me too!

I agree 100% that having the old board available in read-only format would be a tremendous resource! Losing the wealth of information posted there has been a real blow to the KT community.

What Steve said (and Greg)...read-only is light-years better than lost forever.

And knowing that it will be a grunt-level labor of love, if there is some way that the rest of us untutored types can help, I (and, I suspect, a whole bunch of others) will be delighted to help.

"Read Only" for the old board, sounds like a livable compromise to me. :)

I agree. Too much information to just let it go.

    Definitely keep us posted!

In my "real" life, I'm a computer guy, so I'll be glad to help if needed. I know others feel the same way.
