What is your preferred .380 defensive round?

I am trying to select a defensive round in .380 and would like to know what everyone uses. I was about to order the Magtech First Defense when I read the post here where it was found to not expand as expected. My current favorite (from my research) would be the DPX, but it is also the most expensive and very hard to find right now. Can anyone comment on how a 'smiley' affects a solid copper bullet vs. a traditional jacketed lead hollow point? I am afraid that the 'smiley' problem would be very bad for the Hornady Critical Defense with its softer nose; has anyone tried it?

Please post with any observations, comments, or recommendations you may have!

I have read the tests; I just want to find out what KTOG users actually CARRY.

    .380 P3AT = WWB 95 gr FMJ
    9mm PF9 = Hornady 115 gr JHP
    9mm G19 = Hornady 147 gr JHP
    .45 KP90 = WWB 230 gr JHP

BTW, I dont carry the Ruger .45. I'm in Florida and I cant conceal that sucker.

    JMNSHO, & of course, YMMV

I feel comfortable with alternating any good JHP's with FMJ's

I like to have a JHP in the chamber that way if only one shot is necessary it may be less fatal.
Then the first round in the magazine FMJ for penetration, and more likely to feed flawlessly.
Then continue with JHP, FMJ, JHP, FMJ, JHP.

BTW, I voted Golden sabers because I like 'em. ;D

Federal Hydrashoks. No malfunctions or feeding problems in my P3. Plus it's still relatively easy to find.

I actually don't have a preferred one at the moment. Right now I carry 90gr Fiocchi hollow points (not the XTP bullet). In the spare magazine are Fiocchi FMJ. I reserve the right to switch in the future to whatever I think might be better ;)

    1. DPX
    2. Golden Sabre

These are what I prefer but always keeping in mind that bullet type is always less important than good shot placement.

My vote is for "other JHP"
I have been looking for a few JHP's to test in my P3, I hope it will feed/shoot the Buffalo Bore in GD jhp and the Critical Defense. I also picked up some Golden Sabers to try. I will carry whichever my weapon likes and I can shoot well.

i carry Buffalo Bore 95gr JHP's. it's painful, loud and fun to shoot.

  14. dpx in the pipe
    then a santa barb
    then a gold dot
    then another dpx
then a 230 gr hard ball
    then finish out with dpx
no round six to save the springs ;)

DPX right now. Although I go back and forth between those and american eagle fmj's. I just can't make up my mind.
