So I had a bad day at the range today. 50 rounds of CCI 40 grain TMJ and 50 rounds of some new Winchester Super X 40 grain.
I had way too many failure to feed problems. I noticed the rear of the round would be stuck down so it could not line up with the barrel to feed.
After coming home I began looking for the problem. I massaged the feed ramp with some fine sandpaper, but really didn't see the ramp had an problems.
After watching the slide action slowly over and over again, I finally realized the problem was the magazine. The rear of the round would not "pop" up and out of the magazine, requiring you to pull back on the slide again to get it out.
Yes, they are loaded correctly.
So, I worked on filing the magazine where the rim is release into the gun. I widened the slot and pulled it back toward the other end. After a great deal of trial and error (taking small bites), I got them where I can slowly work the slide and the round pops up and feeds like butter.
On a side note, this also helped my manual ejection problem. My extractors were losing the round 3/4 of the way back. Now the next round is coming up quicker which is not allowing the spent case to drop, keeping the round suspended long enough to be ejected!
Two for the price of one.
