Well, gunshow is just around the corner. My old trading buddy called that he was bringing some stiff. I told him to bring the good stuff for me. A Colt .32 hammerless auto and a S&W Mod. 19. He has been trying to get me to buy the Marlin 795 in .22 LR cal and the Mav. 88 shorty 12 ga. for 150 each for some time. I told him 2 for the pair was o.k. for me. I might even go 2 and a quarter, but he was stuck on 3 bills. He got them ina trade from his brother. The .22 has a new Simmons 4X onit and was zeroed when I checked it today . I assume it was fired to zero the scope, but has no visible sighs of wear. The Mav 88 was supposedly never fired by the brother and the old guy said he doesn't shoot shotguns cause of the recoil.

Well, I could live with the Mav 88 at 150, but a new one ain't much more. The .22 Marlin is nice, but I'm not giving him what a new one sells for. I will probably have them for the fall gunshow season. I had a Mav. 88 and sold it. Nw I kinda miss it. I have a P-grip for a Mossy that bolts right on and makes it a "sorta Mossy Cruiser."

The last gun is a Sav. Axis in .22-250 Rem. Like the caliber, but the gun is a bit cheapo feeling. . I know the old guy got it at the local pawn shop cause he had seen it there for 250 with no scope and probably got it for less. The scope that is on it is an old 70s vintage Bushnell Sportview 3X9X32. I recognized it cause it ame off of a gun I traded him a few years back. the stock shoulda been black. The old guy likes to tinker. I asked. He said he painted it a "sand" color, mounted the scope and bore sighted it. He did not fire it. He wanted 350 for it. I thing the guns sold new for less than that at Wally World back when they came ou with a cheapo scope. Way too much for me. I woould only give about 2 for the setup. The stock sounds worse than an interior hollow core door when ya knock on it. It sounds hollow. But it does work, box mag feeds well, scope was a few inches high and to the right at 40 yards. I corrected that.

Oh yeah, he did bring the Colt 32 and the S&W 19. He wanted something good in trad, no $. Put a value of 5 bills for each. He was thinking one of my Norinco pre-ban AKs. for either. No way. I did offer a walnut and blue ADL Rem. 700 in .243 cal, like new & scope for the S&W. He said he already had one. He was taking the Colt hammerless .32 to the show to see what here was to swap..

Whadda ya think Fido? 650 for the whole mess. I think more like 4. Oh well, I am cheap. Got a pic of the set.

Happy to do that for ya, Pancho:

I have one of those short barreled Mavericks (they call them a 'Security 88.) Mine is the 20 inch model which I chose because it holds one more round than the 18 inch version. Mine is currently wearing one of those pistol grips to which you referred, as well. I don't find it to be nearly as 'useless' with a pistol only grip as some folks say. In fact, at reasonable distances I can get hits on target just fine. I have a single point sling on mine so I push against that sling which does a good job of locking the shotgun in and making it controllable. By raising it about chest high - not to my face where it might slap me - I can still keep an eye on the target while using the bead to point the shotgun. I also have a weapon light with a momentary switch on it which works pretty well as an aiming aid in low light conditions. It isn't currently my primary HD shotgun but it would work just fine for that, IMO. Heck, my mom - who is in her mid 60s, has fibromyalgia and has two fake knees - wanted to try it out one day and she likes the pistol grip better than a full stock because she says that the recoil doesn't bother her at all in that configuration. She pretty much refuses to shoot a 12 gauge from the shoulder any more because she says it has gotten to the point that it hurts too much. She uses a different technique than I use - she shoots it more or less from the hip. She has only tried it out to about fifteen yards or so but she has worn out everything she has shot at with it so far including some 8 inch paper targets.

Pancho, you and I think too much a like...:D

Glad to see your still in the swapping business.
Knowing your motives and what you like , a little.

I Know you don't really like any of those very much.

Top dollar for me would be $125 for the Marlin , with the scope,
That way I am pretty sure , if I had to get rid of it, I wouldn't lose money, may even make a few bucks.

The Shotgun....well them are a dime a dozen , not the top of the line stuff ,
I would probably let him keep it, or leave it for $75. You MAY , MAY, find someone to take it off your hands for $100 to $125.

On that Savage, I would consider it for $200-$225 , then see if I could pick up a decent wood stock ,cheap, for it , and it would be a good rifle. Savage bolt guns shoot good.
Only because I really like that 22-250 caliber.

I'm a titewad too ya know.

Yep , your right, $400-$425...,NO MORE. I would sleep good at that price.

Pancho, you did say he was a buddy.

The Marlin is a nice little rifle. The Blue Book is about $110.
The Maverick Blue Book is about $220.
The Axis is about $285.

So don't pay more than $615 plus whatever the accessories are worth.

Pancho pay blue book? Perish the thought! Heck, I'm guessing that this guy being his buddy is the only reason Pancho hasn't figured out a way to get the guy to give him all three guns for free and pay him a little cash along with them! :D

When the time comes I imagine Pancho will negotiate the price of passage with Charon. My guess is that Pancho will probably end up owning the danged ferry.

I have one of those Marlin 795 .22's. That's what I use for Appleseed shoots. IIRC, I bought it maybe 5 or 6 (?) years ago for $89 at a big box Dick's Sporting Goods store. I put on a WGRS peep sight in the rear and a Tech-Sights up front. At that time, Tech-Sights did not make a sight set for the 795, but their front sight for some other gun fit, so I used that. Now, Tech-Sights makes a full sight set for the 795. Sling swivels and a shooting sling completed the outfit. When using a scope with this rifle, I use a strap-on raised cheek rest.

It shoots well. Accurate (about what you'd expect for one of these inexpensive mass produced guns), and rarely jams. Not a high-end firearm, but certainly a reasonable one. I'm glad I bought it.

I occasionally swap out the open sights with a Simmons 4x32 "22 Magnum" scope (very inexpensive) or a Hawke 4x32 "Sport HD" scope (a step up from the Simmons, but still lower-end). These scopes are fine for a rifle like this, since you're typically shooting at short ranges, usually in full daylight, and just punching paper (at least that's my use-case for this rifle).

p.s. - At the same time I bought this rifle, my kids were going to that same Appleseed shoot with me. My daughter picked a Mossberg Plinkster and my son picked a Ruger 10/22. I consider all these guns about equal, but the Ruger cost quite a bit more. The Ruger is more customizeable, but it doesn't shoot any better. The Mossberg is pretty much equivalent to the Marlin in every way, just a slightly different design from a different company. Same intended shooting audience. The Plinkster is a reasonable gun too, but personally I give a slight, very slight, edge to the 795. Cost would be the main determining factor between these two for me.

Finally got back to this thread. Too busy with the "newer" stuff I got. The old guy I swap with here came by to pick up his guns. He had come by the show on Saturday morning to check out the beater Remmy 700 BDL in .270 cal that I had. I had been trying to get him to swap me a nice S&W Model 19 .357 mag for it. He had only brought the Colt .32 hammerless with hom to the show and did not have much luck swapping it for anything good. I told him he wouldn't. He would just have to give it away, unless he found someone that was specifically looking for that gun.

I asked him if he had brought the model 19 to swap that morning. Nope, didn't bring anything. He said that he did not want to take the 3 plastic stock guns home cause he really wanted more walnut and blue ones. He would give me the Savage Axis and the Marlin for the Remington 700 I had been trying to swap him. I told him I wasn't going to come out that way. I could get the 5 bills I wanted for the Remington during hunting seasonfor sure. If he wanted to do it, I would have to have the Maverick 88 also. He said, "well, that's a good deal for you." Yeah, it works for me. He took the strap off the Savage and put it on the Remington 700. So, we were done. He said he would be holding on to the S&W Model 19 for a while longer, or till I found something that he wanted reawl bad. So the AXis, Marlin, & Mav 88 are mine now.
