This rifle began life as a JC Higgins Model 50 that I bought off a buddy years ago for $400, which included the rifle and a 4x weaver scope, and a bunch of ammo. I did some research and found out that the action was an FN produced Mauser 98, which is widely considered one of the best commercial Mausers ever made. This gave me the idea to replace the whippy, shot out sporter barrel with a varmint contour and make a target/tactical precision rifle.
The first go round at the gunsmith never really pleased me. They installed the barrel, reblued it, and put a new stock on it. I wanted a synthetic stock, but at the time, all they could source was a laminate stock from Boyds. What's worse, the bolt was kind of sticky after they put it in the new stock, and the accuracy was never up to what I expected or wanted. They couldn't explain it. For whatever reason, it took me years to realize what was really going on; the inlet and or bedding job on the stock was bad and was torquing the action, causing the bolt to stick slightly and buggering the accuracy.
Then, I saw this:
The Archangel AA98 stock for the Mauser K98. This stock is what I always envisioned when I first started this project years ago. I had to buy one. In the end, I had to buy one from a company in the states that ships to Canada.
The result:
Awesome 11lb tactical precision rifle (hopefully it shoots well!) with 10 round detachable box magazine, chambered in .308 with a Timney trigger, and adjustable cheek piece and length of pull, Harris Bipod. Barrel is free floated along most of the length, as demonstrated by the instruction sheet of the timney trigger unit.
