Suddenly there's NO .223 to be found anywhere locally.
when asked the clerk said that the gvt ordered 1 BILLION rounds (with the mention that historically every time the gvt has placed an order like that, we've been to war within 2 months)

and the ATF(!!) also placed an order for 3 million rounds as well.

maybe I'm paranoid, but why would an agency that only works internally to the US need ammo, unless they're going to use it on it's citizens?

I wish i had more .223 stocked. as it is i have 2-3 mags at most :(

The Dept of Homeland Securityordered 1.5 billion rounds of ammunition (calibers not specified in press reports). Reported on Drudge last week. To be delivered over the next several years. No reasons specified but such a large purchase is unprecedented outside DoD for such large quantities for essentially law enforcement.

Maybe it's to supply the weapons they sold to Mexico in the Fast and Furious scandle

Van Jones says that the OWS this summer will make the 60's look tame....maybe he knows something that we all don't. Maybe the socialists are worried they can't win an election and don't want to miss the best chance they've had in years of fulfilling the goals that were dreamed on in the 60's by likes of Bill Ayers and his lovely wife Bernardine Dohrn ( The grand parents of the modern Progressive, Radical Socialist movement).

Maybe they're just stocking up on ammo while Chinese are still giving out loans and we can still pay the electric bills to run the printing presses day and night...LOL!

Might not even come into play on this, but my local WallyWorld has been outta .22LR for three weeks now. I'm down to about four hundred and really wanted to go shoot next weekend, really digging the 15-22 lately.

...when asked the clerk said...
Glad to know the government, ATF, DoD, Homeland Security, etc. are sharing their ammo order details with a local store clerk. This clerk might be a good, reliable source of firearms/ammo information going forward.

I don't doubt that ammo may be disappearing from store shelves. But I highly doubt some local clerk would be privy to any of the details they appear to be presenting to you. More likely, "My manager screwed up in estimating demand, and didn't order enough."

if the atf moves on us, it's very related.

If the ATF moves on "us" it will be very public, very specific, and will follow after some sort of very public political play to rescind the 2A or the Constitution. At which point this topic would belong in the RTKBA forum. In other words, other than some initial small incidents, we will know they are coming. I honestly do not believe this country will go meekly to the tune DC plays like Canada, Britain, and Australia did. If for no other reason than we have those examples to learn from. And the internet and social media is way more active than it was in the 90's when those countries were brought to their current state. The word would spread faster than they (MIB) could contain it.

Actually it has been freely documented that a company named ATK has received a contract to supply DHS with 450 million - with an M - rounds of .40 S&W over the next 5 years. It would stand to reason they would make a comparable order for 5.56x45. Bottom link goes to that one. There is even a link in the article to read the bid. You can Google it.

http://www.marketwatch.com/story/at...ement-dhs-ice-2012-03-12?reflink=MW_news_stmp

We've also learned that the Department has an open bid for a stockpile of rifle ammo. Listed on the federal business opportunities network, they're looking for up to 175 million rounds of .223 caliber ammo to be exact. The .223 is almost exactly the same round used by NATO forces, the 5.56 x 45mm.

The deadline for earlier this month was extended because the right contractor just hadn't come along.

From what I've read, ATK is parent company for Federal & CCI/Speer among many others and operates Lake City for gov. The big order seems to be mostly Fed. 40 HST and 5.56 from Lake City. How that is affecting overall availability of those calibers and others, can't say....but folks around here appear to be stockpiling again.

because they all use the same rolls of brass for production. if they use it all for the order, they cant make any of other calibers for us!

I have to say, I hate it when threads like this get posted here and KTOG contributes to a self-induced, gun community punishment. This is exactly the kind of panic-induced paranoia that spawned the weapons and ammo shortage 3 years ago. There was no reason for the shortage then that led to situations like our friends at Cheaper Than Dirt selling 380 ammo for $60 a box. At Academy Sports yesterday, all ammo, including 223 was in good supply, but as this crap floats around the internet, I bet that will change by summer. I'm sure the firearms and ammo industry loves it. Hell, they probably start it.

And as far as this?

Maybe double up on the tinfoil... :)

Government agencies stock up with multi-year contracts. That is nothing new. People are getting paranoid over nothing.

Also, the ATF is a very small agency. They aren't 'moving' on anyone. Some of you guys need to get out more. ;)

DHS encompasses quite a few agencies, so they are the parent making purchases for:

Immigration
CBP
ICE
TSA
Coast Guard
NPPD
Secret Service

These agencies shoot a lot of ammo over 5 years. Take the foil hats off guys. :D

I'd like to thank TxCajun and RFB for their (likely futile) efforts to stop the stupid.

Unfortunately it seems to spread much faster than reason can contain.

Shhhh! Gotta run, the atfs are coming!
