I have a Sub 40 in the 3000 serial number range and want to add a rail or mount to the handguard to mount a red dot.

Should I leave this one stock since it is a sought after model, or should I start drilling?

Or, buy another handguard to chop up and keep the original stock?
I can't afford a $100 railed handguard. Trying to stay on a budget.

Thanks.

Search all the mods that have been done here to get a better idea about what and how you want to make the changes. If you screw it up, then get another forearm. Easy to do, and no need to waste the money if you like your changes.

So far I like the idea of a short piece of rail or Weaver mount, screwed through the top of the handguard into an aluminum backing plate. I just don't want to hack up a handguard and destroy any value this old gun might have.

Will a Gen 1 Sub 2000 handguard fit my gun? Are they the same?

Yes the gen I will fit the older Sub-Rifles. Thats what I did to keep from cutting the factory (original) piece. Get a five slot universal rail and have fun. Check out my thread "Universal rail mods"
Oh, and I wouldn't mount a rail to the forend. They are canted. Get a barrel mount (I used UTG)

Look at the first couple pages of the Scope Mount Plans thread stickied at the top of the page. I did a Weaver mount for TxCajun several years ago and the part number is in that post.

Oops. My bad. Missed the Sub 40 reference, and was thinking Sub2K. By all means, get a Gen 1 Sub2K handguard for modifying..
