Had the Sub 2K Gen 1 9mm for over a year. Shot over 1000 rounds through it using various ammo. However, this rifle continues to stovepipe every 50-100 rounds. I have tried using AE 124gr, Speer Lawman 147gr, Magtech 115gr, and factory reloads 115gr. All of which, with the exception of AE 124gr, had at least 1 stovepipe every 100 rounds.

I know this carbine needs to be broken into, but I had well over 1000 rounds through this carbine. Should I send it back to the factory for repair?

Might not be the rifle. I had that problem with one of my mags dragging the floorplate and it would screw up the feed process like that. Next time it does that, set that mag aside and see if the problem goes away. After I filed the sharp edges around the plate if fed perfectly.

Kel Tek improved the ejection port at some point to reduce stove piping. I have a Gen I with the earlier design, and I get SPs, too, unless I use Mec-Gar mags. I called K-T about it, and they sent me a small metal clip I was supposed to attach to the ejection port, but it was too fiddly for me to fuss with, especially since I found that it ran reliably with the Mec-Gar mags. You may have the earlier design (the ejection port is smaller...). Just something to consider.

I still hope Kel Tec can fix my rifle, because I don't want to limit my rifle to just one brand of magazines.

My Gen1 Glock 19 would have a stovepipe (FTE) about every 200 rounds. I was not happy with that but not too worried. I finally got around to disassembling the receiver to do R&D for the triggers that I manufacture, and did an inspection of the internals. I found that the plastic on the lower inside of the ejection port showed a good amount wear from being hit by ejecting cases. The steel bolt tube is just below that and looked perfectly clean. I used an exacto knife, needle files, and varying degrees of sandpaper to lower (remove the beat up plastic) and slightly enlarge the plastic of the ejection port. I have not tested the results with the several hundred rounds needed to sign off on the mod, but am optimistic that it will help.
Kel Tec enlarged the ejection port on the Gen2 for a reason. Reliable ejection.
PS, Be super careful using an exacto knife like I described. You can open up your hand PDQ. I have been using one like this for many years and have developed my technique. No stitches.

Went to UPS today to try to ship the carbine. Cost around $50 to ship. I think I will try other methods before sending the carbine back to Kel Tec.:eek::eek:

So I tried filing my ejection port and now it looks like this. Do you think this is good enough?

Don't know where your shipping from but $50 seems pretty high. I shipped both CMR and RFB to Keltec and sent copy of FedEx invoices showing shipping fees. They sent me a check about a week after I got both back. They have been paying shipping fees as long as your the original owner.

Personally I would have disassembled the rifle to work on the ejection port as it is turns out better if you can work the port from both sides, plus you keep the plastic filings out of the action...
I recommend blowing everything out really good with compressed air.
You have clearly enlarged the ejection port, but as I stated earlier the lower edge of the ejection port was where the brass was hitting in my rifle. I recommend lowering it to the top of the steel bolt tube. It looks like you could go a little farther.
I attached a pic of my modified ejection port this time.
The only way to be sure if your work was successful is to test it.
Good luck.

Went to the range today. Shot 100 rounds of 115gr reman, 100 rounds of AE 124 gr, and 50 rounds of Federal HST 124gr +P.

Results:

100 rounds of reman: 3 FTE
100 rounds of AE: 0 FTE
50 rounds of HST: 0 FTE

I am pretty satisfied with the results. It seemed like the FTE was caused by weak reman ammo producing insufficient blowback energy.

I was shooting my G27 with a friend and bragged how it had never mis-fed.
He said not possible, that his malfunctioned every mag.
He shot mine (was using UMC plinking fodder from W/M). Flawless.
Then we loaded it up with a mag full of his :quote:free reloads:quote: and it malfunctioned every 3-4 rounds. Fail to chamber, stovepipes, etc.
I loaded another mag full of factory ammo and ran it out.
We put the mag of his reloads back in and, "jam-city".
I got back home and had several of his reloads still in the mag (since we couldn't run them out:rolleyes:) and autopsied them.
Overall length of all of them was out of spec long.
Most of the cases were out of spec long.

I could not find a diplomatic way to tell him that he needed to study more about "re-manufacturing" ammo but I'm sure he figured it out:rolleyes:.
Measure, check, measure, and measure again.
