I have an SU16A with the B model sights. The muzzle blast from the A Model without a flash hider/flash suppressor is quite impressive. I have been considering options for one of these but there doesn't seem to be a lot of space past the front sight to mount one. I have seen photos on this forum with flash hider mounted and the front sight in place. I have read the C model barrel is threaded (1/2 x 28) for the standard M16/M4 flash hider/flash suppressor. Can the A Model barrel be threaded for 1/2 x 28 or is the barrel too thin and would require a non-standard device.

Is there something that precludes using a Thread Alignment Tool and doing it by hand yourself?

No. Go ahead. Might have pretty good results on shorter attachments, but I would not suggest it for an amateur installing a suppressor/silencer. The considerably increase in length will really magnify the slightest misalignment. Baffle strikes can cost a lot more money than a machinist.
