SU16 AR style Safety project

I love my SU16, after doing a course shooting 2k rounds over the weekend and using the safety many times I dislike the safety the most. I wanted to get rid of the push safety and get something like the AR style safety.

I looked around and found no after market parts and was unsure if an AR style safety would work and had no one with it I could try.

so i made a prototype of one and I wanted to share the results, I give it an A for effort and a C for aesthetics.

Here is a video of my trying it out, installation is not very difficult, it is a bit of a pain to get back together.

Just thought I would share this.

I started out using a wooden dowel to get the basic shape and mechanics which was a nights work, then the aluminum dowel trimmed down took a significant amount of time using jewelry files and hacksaw blade and finally trimming down a rectangle aluminum bar for the toggle switch and tapped the pieces together.

If anyone happens to have a ambi AR style safety I wold love to know if it works in the SU16

Nice. I'm not sure how well an aluminum safety will hold up to regular use though - I assume there's a reason AR safeties are steel.
I agree I was hoping once I have something working I could use it to create a cast to make it out of steal or at least get a new piece milled based on this prototype. I noticed the AR styles have a tab to stop it from spinning all the way around, this "clicks" into place using 2 90 degree strait slots for the spring to sit in which prevents it from sliding out but does not totally stop it from rotating all the way around, the initial design to stop it did not work.

The design is basic and functional between safe and fire I will try and post a pic of it in case someone else wants to try.

I would love to see this picked up and produced professionally by someone like Tandemkross. I'm sure at the right price there'd be a ton of buyers for it. I would certainly buy one as long as it wasn't too expensive.

Don't want to take your thread down a different road, but wanted to ask how your SU-16 held up for your 2000 rounds shoot. Any jams or failures of any kind?

Thanks!
Surprisingly well and it seemed to perform better with minor lube where the others soaked there ar in oil. I had about 4 or 5 failure to feed. The instructors were impressed with the guns performance there was another huy using keltec sub2000 for the course.
Ejecting mags was a pain due to it being stucky
