Stove pipe fail to eject...solution

3181 Views 8 Replies 6 Participants Last post by  silverback
My perfectly preforming new P17 started having problems on 3rd day of shooting.
Using the same ammo, CCI HP mm 36gr, Aguila 40 gr SE, and REM 40gr Thunderbolt, that had preformed without any issues I started to get 2 - 5 stove pipe partial ejections with each mag.
I had gently cleaned after each of the first two sessions.

At home I discovered that the tiny extractor (part 114) hook would not move without very firm finger pressure.
Remembering a video of dismantling the bolt (111) I knew there is a very tiny spring that should flex and let the extractor move to preform its function,. This was not happening.

That video was very helpful and gave me confidence to dive in and fix this.
Needed to Carefully use my roll pin punches ( correct sizes) to help get the bolt from the slide, and again to loosen the extractor pin (130) . And very carefully removed the extractor and insured that the tiny spring would not get away.
Found some dirt, but discovered the extractor had a wear line along the entire length through the finish on one side. Looking for the cause of this wear mark, I found a sharp burr restricting the extractor slot and finally almost freezing it in place.

Cleaned up that edge a bit, cleaned up the firing pin and channel, very light lube, reassembled.
Using the pin punch helped me get the spring and extractor realigned.
Now the little extractor and spring moves again as it should.

Have not been able to get back to the range, but some bench testing with spent empty cases, the P17 can now fling the cases out again.

One correction for the video instructions:
The screws holding the cover/slide/bolt together is now a T20 Torx.l

Thank-you to whoever made this video, shared it with us at on this forum, You saved me from having to ship my P17 across the country.
Sorry I did not get a picture of the wear mark on the extractor.

Will update when I can verify all functionality back to perfection.

UPDATE...
Got to the range and my P17 is running perfect again.
Outdoor, 39 deg, nearly 200 rounds. Same HighPower ammo as above and added 3 mags of CCI 40gr Standard Velocity 1070 fps...zero failures.

I had the exact same problem. After receiving my P17 I clean it and ran about 200 rounds with no issues. Brought it home, cleaned it and put it away. A few days later I was was just checking it out and sure enough it would not eject. Took it apart and the ejector was stuck. A pile of **** was keeping that spring from functioning correctly. Cleened it again and now works perfectly.

Nice video but I'd ditch the fuzz ball Q tips and get a medical/dental grade 6 inch cotton tip applicator. They're for sale on ebay and inexpensive. No fuzz balls!

I thought i had it worked out myself.
Did all the polishing and first 6 mags everything ran fine. Did not clean it. Went to the range and started have same issues. Came home and did a quick scrub of bolt. Went out today and had intermittent issues. Upon careful examination i found that every round that was not getting ejected was a federal round. Copper washed round nose. I loaded six mags if thunderbolt and rapid fired all six without issue.

Sorry cant tell you exactly which federal it was. I have all my 22lrs in 5 gallon buckets. I had learned from previous ammo shortages to stock ammo deep.

I generally carry my 22lr in little pouches that hold about 800 loose rounds. So i went through several pouches pulling all federal stamped rounds out of the mix. There are a few aquilla , cci and Winchester rounds that i left in the to shoot pile.

I shot at least 9 mags worth today. Tomorrow i am going to try the pure thunderbolt batch and see if i can duplicate ralid fire without issue again.

I am hoping that will resolve the delema.

If it does i will stil be disappointed as my small ruger lcpii has tun everything without any problems what so ever with various bulk ammo. The lcpii wont run with federal punch but thats the only ammo that has given it a problem.

I thought the p17 was supposed to run with any 22lr. I guess the 22lr gremlins wont be denied.

I am begining to have the slide fail to lock back on empty mag. I guess the sheet metal bolt lock is giving up the ghost.

I would send them in but spending 60.00 bucks to ship it seems foolish given the cost of the gun.

This fact is disappointing from kel tec. Ruger sends a shipping label for customers to ship guns back for repairs.

This shipping cost and the fact that kel tec will not sell parts is becoming a point of contention for me.

I own a bunch if kel tec weapons. if they wont allow you to buy parts for small repairs or pay for shipping on warranty repairs i may end my infatuation and relationship with this brand.

It is a shame as i have always liked thier designs and products.

I need to send one of my cp33s in as the recoil guide rod washer popped off. This week the slide lock button popped off and slide lock mechanism has broken. So theres 60 bucks out of pocket.

I guess i may be the odd shooter who puts a ton of rounds through my 22lrs.

I may end up just sticking with my ruger lcpii, lcrx 3 inch and my henry pump action 22lrs. They run flawless woth any bulk ammo and the company takes care of their customers.

As my P17 is only a range toy, if it does not function well with a certain brand of ammo it does not bother me. If it only fires CCI Mini Mags and one or two other premium brands without problems, that is alright also. $12.99 for a hundred of CCI Mini Mags at Walmart does not seem to expensive to enjoy using the P17 at the range.

Can I get that video
Update on my old post. I got all the gremlins worked out. It runs with pretty much anything now. A good thorough polishing and chamber polish will keep the p17 running like a champ. The lcpii has long been sold. My p17s are my go too 22lr pistols. Well aside from my advantage arms 22lr p17 upper. That keeps the muscle memory going for my glocks. Once the possible bugs get worked out the p17 is heads and shoulder above the reat for value per dollar.
