Sorry for the french in the title but?...those were the words that recently resonated in my old Jarhead. LOL!

Reason being?...I had those (2) 500rd bricks of 30gr HVM's in my truck for a couple hot days...then?...my grandson wanted to ride in Popaw's big truck heading out to a family dinner last Friday night so I moved the ammo inside and onto the kitchen table but then?...I headed out for work early Saturday morning and luckily remembered the ammo on the kitchen table and went right back inside and wifey was like...

"Whazzup?...Whadja Forget this time?"

and as I grabbed the cardboard box of all those HVM rounds I told her...

"This is rimfire ammo...if the dogs chew on a box of this it'll blow their face off."

She gulped hard as she almost spit her coffee out rolling both her head and her eyes at the same time.

(We have two curs that are perpetual chewers)

but I knew something needed to be done...ammo doesn't belong in a hot truck all day long and it sure as heck doesn't belong laying out on my kitchen table where the dogs could get at it or worse.

I never measured anything...but I feel I did "just luck out" by selecting the...

"Rangemaxx .50cal Ammo Box"

$15 at the local Bass Pro.

I chose it because it was the largest I saw and?...as opposed too the Plano ammo boxes they had (for cheaper) the Rangemaxx seemed far better made with a nice rubber waterproof gasket sealing things up nicely like the lids on Mil-Spec ammo boxes...but the surprise came when I got home...wondering if all those bulbous HVM clear plastic boxes would fit and yep!....with room to spare! :)

It will hold 4 layers of 9 boxes...(3X3 and perfectly fit side-too-side I might add)...for a total of 36 boxes of HVM or CCI...(Armscorp cardboard way more)...

and then the real big surprise came as since I only have enough HVM to create 2 of the 4 layers?...I thought...

"Gee...I wonder?..."

and sure enough?...yep! :)

It's a perfect fit for my PMR as well!...and?...(2) extra mags...my speed loader..and some more random ammo and?...even has a lock hole molded in here....

so that this old Jarhead can in fact..."Secure His Chit!" LOL!

Leave it to me to make a 3 pic tutorial out of a freaking $15 ammo box but?...I figured some of you might think this pretty cool as well! :)

L8R, Bill. ;)

I'll let Jinkster answer from his perspective, but I can tell you that I have had one since they first came out and mine sure shoots better, but then again I only use Hornady CD, so I can only speak to that. Mine never liked CCI, so I haven't used that any more. I have shot quite a bit of V-max after the switch and it was much better.

The 505 barrel is longer and is supposed to allow the pressure to build slightly more and throw the slide back a little stronger thus improving cycling. That's what I've gathered from reading up on the subject
Correct...the 5" barrel is hitting higher pressures and maintaining those pressures for an extended period of time during which more powder is being burned with results of...

1. Increased FPS which leads too...

2. Increased Bullet Performance (be it expansion or penetration)

and?...

3. A stronger and more positive cycling of the slide...which results in a marked increase in reliability with more efficient ejection and feeding.

So you are saying a factory 30-30 fired in a rifle has higher pressure than the same ammo fired in a 14" Contender? A Thompson submachine gun has higher pressure than a 1911? I think you might need to slow your roll a bit.

Much depends on the powders burn rate but in general?...yes...longer barreled firearms will generate slightly higher pressures than shorter barreled firearms as it allows for more burn time instead of lots of unburned powder getting blown out the muzzle to create the huge fireball such as we see on the PMR...but wish granted...roll slowed.

Bye! :)

Peak pressure will occur somewhere between the throat and an inch down the bore with slow rifle powders. After peak, pressure drops quickly as the bullet travels down the bore. I dare say my 22 mag derringer has the same peak pressure as my PMR and rifle.

I stand corrected...You're right...I did miss speak there...it was a rushed answer from my smartphone at work and?..also a brain fart...so it's only the extended time of pressure that's adding some significant authority too the cycling of the slide and a few fps more velocity too the bullet.

Post hole is correct about "rifle" ammo. One of the reasons that I have always said is that Hornady CD is ammo designed for pistols. Mine even with original barrel never once had any issue with CD. Now with the longer barrel (and careful loading) other rifle ammo performs better.
