Red dot on poly P15?

329 Views 9 Replies 4 Participants Last post by  firydeth
I happily picked up my new polymer P15 Friday, and tried installing a Holosun…..

I’ve installed red dots on red dot-ready pistols before and it was no sweat.

Does the the polymer take a red dot? If so, could someone explain a bit, as I didn’t see it in the owner’s manual.

as far as I can tell the gun does not have a rail or any sort of optic mount support out of the box.

there are 2 screws near the trigger that a gunsmith could rig a mount of sorts but it may require making a custom mount for it, and that may cost you more than its worth. Something like:

this type of mount isn't great for carry, it adds width and clunk. If its to carry I would just get a laser sight instead.

I wouldn't try to put on onto a moving slide. Most red dots can't take that kind of abuse, and most defense pistols, most of the upper part of the gun is the slide, so its aggravating to fit one. The in the grip and around the slide style like in the pic solve that problem.
Kel tec has either made them or is going to make plates for various red dot foot prints. It will replace the polymer part of the slide that houses the rear sight. I would contact kel tec before you proceed further. They do answer the phone and questions quickly.

I removed the top four screws, and the cross screw and the rear sight. I can’t see how to remove the polymer part of the slide.

Like I said I would wait to ask kel tec

Thanks. So just use more force. Lol. That’s always my instinct but I’ve also busted things and learned to ask. Thanks.

I’d like to confirm that Kel-Tec said the same today 5/16/23 when I called. They haven’t produced the plates but they will. They will mount below where the polymer part of the slide is.
OK, 19:39 in the video is where I go over removing the back cover on the slide. You have to work it slowly, as it is a little brittle and cranking it off with a screwdriver is likely to crack it.
Be careful of the striker safety spring when reassembling it.

I don't think the mounting system will be a "plate" as we see it on other pistols, but an entire replacement for the rear slide cover that you can mount the optic to. You can see a prototype on the left in the image.

A Holosun 407k would likely be the ideal sight to put on, but I'm interested on seeing some more on the new Ruger Ready Dot.

Thanks for the video! Too bad they didn’t make the mounting surface under the polymer piece, because I was ready to mount my 407K, ACSS reticle. But when they get these ready, I’ll be ready.
By any chance is the aluminum version RDS-ready?

Well, they both come ready for a red dot, but you need to purchase the mount... and they aren't ready yet.
I like the thinking behind this design as it allows the red dot to take up space that is normally being taken up by the rear sight. Also, while maybe 90% of people will want an RMSC footprint, it's nice to have options to change it, especially in the future.
The metal frame should come the same as the polymer frame version with a rear cover with the rear sight in it. All the images I've seen show the metal frame version having a machined aluminum cover though. If that part is ever made available to purchase (which I hope it will eventually), I would get it to upgrade my polymer framed gun... if I don't put any red dot on the gun.
