A Florida jail is gearing up a special team of corrections officers to be called in when things go from bad to worse inside the prison-- and their go-to is a Kel Tec Shotgun with specialty less lethal ammunition.

The Jail

Historic Marion County, Florida is home to Ocala and supports a population of over 300,000, making it one of the largest counties in the Sunshine State. With that many people comes a fair share of those who have problems with the law and occasionally have to visit the local place of incarceration.

According to the 2014 report from the Marion County Sheriff's Department, the average daily inmate population was 1,399 and it cost the county some $28.9 million to keep them clothed, fed and safe which was offset by 1,072,579 man hours of labor the guests of the county contributed back to the betterment of the Ocala area that year, which included work on the 58 acre County Inmate Farm.

At its maximum capacity, the jail can house 1,974 inmates.

To keep things under control, the jail employs over 150 corrections officers, with sworn officers required to have over 530 hours of training with an additional 40 hours of in-service every year to stay fresh.

However, if things get out of hand and an emergency breaks out that needs a response larger than a couple of COs with some pepper spray, they call in SOG.

A shift in tactics

"The CERT teams we had in place previously, they have to go hands-on as they approach a pod," Marion County Sheriff Chris Blair told My News 13.

With that in mind, and following in the wake of four correction officers being hurt in recent years, Blair created Florida's first Level 1 Special Operations Group, one of just 17 in the country trained to respond with standoff capabilities if needed.

Blair did this with the help of Williamsburg, Virginia-based US C-SOG, a corrections special operations government contractor that sets up such teams. Moreover, SOG loves Kel Tec Shotguns.

"The US C-SOG has implemented the Kel-Tec KSG in current training programs with great results," reads a 2012 release from the group. "In addition, the KSG has already been used in real world Corrections Special Operations mission situations with great success. Consequently, the KSG is quickly becoming the fastest adopted weapon in the US for corrections facilities."

The KSGs the SOG team is equipped with are stuffed with Lightfield Less Lethal Research Super Star rounds. These 12 gauge shells use a solid rubber "star" that looks like a kid's toy but hits like a ton of bricks.

Designed for engagements from a distance from 2-15 yards, they are low recoiling which means you can rip out a few quick to help tame multiple aggressors. However, the company contends the design of the star round reduces likelihood for injury over legacy rubber bullet or beanbag rounds.

Kel Tec for one, also located in Florida, is pleased that C-SOG has chosen the KSG for their unique work.

"We are honored to see this application for the KSG," says Derek Kellgren of Kel-Tec. "We fully support the mission of the US C-SOG and their commitment to keeping our corrections industry personnel equipped to uphold justice."

The equipment shown is lacking in protection for the Officers in the basics. First, Footwear. protection needs upgrading. Anti puncture boots, with steel toe caps. Second, Knee and elbow pads. Third, Head and eye protection. Even though the ammunition, and design of the shotguns will give u great take down power, u still need grappling capability.

The team looks great, and I recognize there are politically correct considerations. Accept it, LE work of any kind these days is political, but I see no reason why the emphasis on less than lethal munitions. These guys are already in prison because they are a menace to society, if they riot in there, then eliminate the menace. As long as they know they aren't going to be killed, they will just keep doing it, and probably even get paroled at some point so they can go back out and prey on society.
