Could these two screws being loose cause the bulges in these cases? Had way, way, way too many FTE, FTFD, stovepipes and jams yesterday with ammo that has previously run flawlessly. I’ve run 2000k plus Aguila alone in the last 2 months with barely a hiccup for it to start giving problems all of a sudden. I didn’t notice the loose screws til later while cleaning. Have locktighted them, but it’ll be awhile before I can get to the range. Just looking for thoughts, experience and moral support at this point.

Your P17 definitely seems to be firing out of battery and appears to be close to a case head separation mini-KaBoom on a 22LR, that's probably not fatal but is still something to be avoided.

After 10K+ rounds of ammo, I'd be looking at carbon buildup in areas that might be missed during the regular cleaning and/or wear. I'd probably try to shoot some polymer safe Gun Scrubber or similar solvent into the innards to dissolve and flush out any carbon deposits that may be back in there, followed by a spray of RemOil.

I'm kinda geeky so I'd also use my Casio digital camera that's capable of low resolution higher frame rate video as a poor man's high speed camera to slow down the firing to see the P17 firing out of battery. That might inform an opinion as to why it's happening.

Maybe you should just replace a gun after 7 or 8 thousand rounds of firing, especially with inexpensive rimfire handguns. This from someone who buys multiples and never puts more than 2000 rounds through any one of them, so I don't understand 10000 rounds.

The screws dont habe anything to do with case seating. They only hold sights to slide. To be honest if you send an email to kel tec you will find out that the bulge is normal in the p17. It has more to due with the barrel itself. Its case support of chamber. King of like older glock barrel case buldge calked glock smile.

That being said there could also be some carbon ring build up in the chamber keeping the case from fully seating.


This is not a recommendation but something i have done. I have taken a 22lr bronze bore brush and wrapped some 0000 steel wool around it. Chuck it up in a variable speed drill and on a slow speed clean the chamber. Its not going to take metal off and clean the chambeer.

Other issue regarding failures to feed and your round count could be attributed to mag springs. Try stretching apring out a bit and see if it helps or send email to kel tec asking for new springs.

I spoke with the repair department and they did advise that if those screws were loose then that can cause the issues that you are experiencing. You do seem to have the old style slide cover screws. The technician would like me to ask you if you would be ok sending the firearm in for service so he can get anything that needs to be replaced or updated he can do that for you. How long ago did you purchase the firearm and do you still have a copy of your purchase receipt?

Chamber is clean as a whistle. I clean after every outing and don't allow a build up.

Interesting. Good to hear. I used to just clean chamber with bore brush each outing. But i use dirty ammo and found carbon build up stoll existed. So after a good scrubbing with oooo wool chambering even better. Hopefully this sight plate will help.

I've been using a .243 cal brush after a 5min or so soak with hoppes, then boresnake, then big for caliber qtips til clean. Lite film of oil then dry with another qtip. Been working good.
