Underwood's website now has info on their two upcoming offerings with Lehigh Defense's .32 ACP 50 grain Xtreme Cavitator bullet. This new oddly shaped bullet appears to offer both the good penetration of FMJ's and the larger wound track of JHP's.

Standard pressure https://www.underwoodammo.com/32-acp-50-grain-xtreme-cavitator/
Velocity - 1,000 fps
Energy - 111 FPE
Penetration - 14 inches
OAL - not stated

+P version https://www.underwoodammo.com/32-acp-p-50-grain-xtreme-cavitator/
Velocity 1,100 fps
Energy - 134 FPE
Penetration - no info given
OAL - not stated

I found no mention of the barrel length used to get these results.

It appears Lehigh has goosed the specs for their ammo by 50 fps and now quote 925 fps.
http://www.lehighdefense.com/collections/ammo/products/32-acp-50gr-xtreme-cavita tor-ammunition?variant=13337135428
Velocity - 925 fps, which Lehigh previously said would be from a 2.7" barrel (875 fps from NAA Guardian 2.2" barrel)
Energy - 95 FPE
Penetration in bare gel - 13.5 inches
OAL - .945"

MRC over on the Seecamp forum has done significant handloading experimentation with this bullet and found it performed reliably in his Seecamp when loaded to 960 - 1060 fps with an OAL of .945". See the details here. http://www.seecamp.com/cgi-bin/yabb2/YaBB.pl?num=1452905163/88#88

Neither manufacturer is shipping their ammo yet, although the bare bullets can be purchased from Lehigh.

These two Underwood versions seem like they'll have much better terminal ballistic performance than the Lehigh ammo.

Hmmmm ... if the OAL isn't too short, I'd be interested in the standard pressure version. If I "need" more than standard pressure in .32 ACP, then it's time to move up to 9mm.

STILL waiting to see some independent third-party test results on the original Lehigh offering, though. If I had the resources and time available (not to mention the ammo, which seems to always be sold out), I'd do it myself, buuuuuuuut...

Yeah, I'd sure like to see some independent penetration tests of this round. Real world shootings with it, I imagine will be quite rare.

I spoke with Underwood today about the ammo.

The test results on the website were from a Kel-Tec P32.

They said the ammo should be available by the end of May.

BeachJumperUnit,

Great! Let us know how it runs.

I've only seen 2 user reports on Underwood's +P ammo.

  • MRC reported on the Seecamp forum (and on the Underwood site) it runs well in his Seecamp.

  • An unknown user reported on the Underwood site, "This ammo functions perfectly in my Kel-Tec P32. When shot into an old book, FMJ penetrated 1.25" but the wound looked like something from an ice pick. This ammo penetrated a little less at 1" but the wound looked like it was created by a wadcutter. This is my new carry ammo for my P32 and is a good balance between the puny wound channel of FMJ and the poor penetration of hollow points in 32 ACP."

Primary Test weapon for the Underwood Ammo was, purportedly, the kel tec p32, which, of course, has a 2.7 inch barrel. I own the weapon and carry it with +P. Because of its design, uniting the penetration of FMJ ball ammo with HP, it has a greater lethality than any .32 weapon carried in an earlier time by many of the police and officers in Europe. Ian FLEMING would have been gushing, had it been available when he wrote Doctor No, and 007 would never have begun his reign of legalized terror with the insufferable .25 Beretta(?).
