In the counter section I had asked for advice on getting a decent budget ar. Got some good advice. I was originally going to get a bare bones Black Friday special. Something like Academy had. A DPMS Sportical. No sights, fa or dust cover. Not the I would use it anyway but it looks kinda cheap without them. The fa and dust cvr that is. Then I figured in tax, bg ck and buying sights. Then I came across this private deal: Like new and I mean new. When I had it apart there was hardly any residue any where. He said he had it a couple of years and did not even remember if he fired it. Only a few rounds at most. He had a few ar's and more top of the line. He had 2 Tapco mags for it. 550. And that was stretching my budget. It is now the most expensive firearm I own.

Congrats on entering a whole new world of addiction! ... er, I mean, shooting! :D

Honestly, I'd keep it as-is for the most part and save any add-ons for a future AR build or purchase - use the plain-jane as a "baseline" to compare against, like for whenever you add a muzzle brake to another one (compare recoil), or a drop-in trigger, or whatever else. But for sure, I'd recommend getting rid of those Tapco mags, unless they somehow prove to be reliable, and instead get some better magazines - Magpul P-Mags, Daniel Defense, or even plain GI mags (with an upgraded follower) - which can be had all day long for well under $20 apiece, sometimes as low as $12 or even $10.

Is that a Smith & Wesson M&P-15? A Ruger AR556? Or ... "other"?

Nice! Those M&P are very well made and very well priced. Ours have been impressively accurate and trouble free. A few bucks (less than 10, as I recall?) can get you a rail kit to attach a under rail for a grip if you like that. We didn't do too much to ours ... scope, under-rail, cheap grip/bipod, and a sling. Simple and cheap, that thing was as good as anything we put it up against in 3-gun, many of them guns and gear approaching $2k spent!

I forgot that didn't I. Duh. It's a smith Wesson MP15 II.
EXCELLENT CHOICE!!!!! I have a original model MP Sport. Put a Pentex 3x15x50 power zoom scope on it. Overkill perhaps, but I got it for just over $100! They were discontinued because it would not hold up to the recoil of the heavy magnums it was made to use on, not a problem on the 223. 1" 100 yard groups with Hornady 55 grain SP.Not bad for a "budget" AR:D
Like Dark suggests those mags not too reliable. Brownells has a Mag Pul mags on sale for 10 for $100, killer deal!!!

Reviews on the new gen2 Tapcos with the tan follower (mine) have been good. I'll give them a chance and see what they do.

Hope your tapcos work good........you still want/need more mags. You will be glad if you jump on the ten pack of Pmags for $100 from Brownells. I doubt a better deal will come along on quality AR mags so don't wait. Cannot imagine the deal will be for long.

More mags will mean I will burn thru ammo faster. LOL. I don't shoot the few long guns I have that often. My bread and butter guns are my handguns. I try to stay as proficient as I can with them. I live in the burbs and only get to the public range about once a month. Retired and on a fixed income limits what I can spend on guns, ammo, range time etc. If I put 150rnds thru a firearm at a range session that's a lot. 2 mags will do me just fine. By the way I'm the kinda guy you would like to buy a gun from. Not a whole lot of rounds thru them and very well kept.

Advice:

If you want an optic, add a red dot (Aimpoint or EOTech)
Get some P-mags
Get some quality ammo.
Shoot, clean, oil, & repeat.
Assuming you don't want/need magnification, I would completely agree with the red dot optic. A very useful and far cheaper alternative to Aimpoitn/Eotech would be a Primary Arms Micro Dot or TRS-25, currently on sale:

You will need a 'riser' mount to get it high enough to be useful on an AR. It doesn't have to be super high quality.

Red dots are great and if you want fast nothing beats them. They are accurate but not precise. For accuracy nothing beats a decent scope. A great option for the AR is the Nikon P223 3x32 scope. A good low power scope is almost as quick as a red dot and is capable of much greater accuracy when needed. I have a Eotech, great sight but it bounced from long gun to long gun till it found its permanent spot on the KSG. Perfect match with a shotguns capability. In the end it's priorities. Wanna bounce a can, kicking it from 25 to 50 yards fast red dot. Want Something a bit slower but far more precise scope. Of course young eyes are always well served with iron sights.

Fez, congrats on the new AR15. You will love it and no doubt shoot it far more than you expect. Iron sights are just fine for plinking but if you decide you want an optic I would suggest a red dot type sight.

Also I would order yourself a new handgrip. Magpul, Hogue, ATI, all make molded handgrips that are far superior to the standard plastic one. Best $20 you can spend on an AR.
