Has anyone out there purchased any of these? If so, what is your take on them?

I need about ten more for my AK, but am torn between surplus (which are usually dirty and of questionable function, but steel) or Magpul's new ones.

I haven't tried Magpul AK mags. Their AR mags are supreme though.

I prefer the steel AK mags, that's all I've ever bought. I like those 1/4" thick feed lips - I don't think you could damage those with a sledgehammer.

I disassemble my AK mags and if there are any dents in them, I push them out from the inside with a kitchen utensil, or if the wife is around, I use a wooden dowel instead. Then I put them in a bucket of scalding hot water mixed with OxyClean (you'll probably find that with your wife in the laundry room). Agitate, let them sit, agitate, sit, repeat. That OxyClean tends to foam up a bit, so do it over the carpet only if your wife is out of the house. This gets them pretty clean. Next up, I run them through the dishwasher with powder detergent. Hint: This is NOT recommended if your wife is fussy about bits of grease and cosmoline left behind in the dishwasher. Women are strange like that. That comes off easily when you scrub it with steel wool, but if the dishwasher is still new, you might want to try a soft sponge instead. Dry them as best you can with paper towels, then throw them in the oven at low heat for half an hour or so to finish drying them (same caveat about fussy women - but you can spray lemon juice in the oven afterwards to help control the smell). Even after this, they will probably come out with a little surface rust on them, so sand them thoroughly inside and out to get rid of that. The kitchen table is good for this, if the wife is gone, otherwise do it outside. Then tie a string to them at some attachment point and hang them from a tree limb in the front yard for painting. Any old flat black spray paint will do. If there's any breeze, they sound like deep throated manly wind chimes as they're drying in the tree. And the neighbors will really like them too. If you want to lubricate them, don't use a wet lube (no oil, etc.) Use dry graphite spray. Use your leaf blower to get the graphite overspray off the couch cushions.

I've never had a single problem with any steel mags - Korea, Timbuktu, or wherever the heck they're made - nor have I had any problem with the supposed "crap" mags by Tapco. In fact, come to think of it, I've never once had a single magazine-related problem EVER with either of my AK-pattern firearms (WASR-10 and Zastava M92 PAP). If the Magpul mags are anything at all like their AR mags - no problems with any of those, either, and I've got something like 8 or 10 of them for the stuff I have that uses AR mags - then I don't expect you'll encounter any magazine-related issues with them, either. Mags aren't really much of a touchy issue when it comes to AK-pattern rifles/pistols chambered in 7.62x39. They generally follow a basic crap-tastic old-school Commie level of "precision" that just about any third-world country on the planet has been able to reproduce successfully, because it's a stupid-simple design with a HUGE margin of error in terms of quality. It's when you get into the 5.56, 7.62 NATO (.308), and 12 Gauge realms on the AK platform that they start to get a bit more picky, since those weren't originally part of the design and they tend to require a slightly higher degree of QC.

Soooooo, yeah. Buy some. And I think I might pick up a couple of 'em, myself. Just ... y'know ... 'cause. :)

I don't know from personal experience, but my friends advise me to never agitate the wife in the laundry room (or anywhere), much less, let her sit and fester, then agitate her again!!??? Either your wife is a pushover, or you are weaving a yarn to put a shine on for the men. :D:thumbup:

All of the above is true, except for the graphite spray on the couch (I already *knew* to do THAT outside). All the other stuff was a learning experience for me on the first go'round with AK mags.

As far as OxyClean, yeah, I know all about how/when/why you use that. If I didn't wash my own clothes, I wouldn't have any clothes to wear! As far as a pushover wife, if you tried pushing on mine, you'd be needing to schedule an office visit with her (in orthopedics) to fix the mess she'd make of you. You gotta watch out for those Ukrainian women! (BTW - the oil/cosmoline in the dishwasher was the worst of the punishments I had to endure, the smell in the oven was only a small sentence enhancer for the main crime.)

My AK mags DID come out very nice however.
