Is a light on the KSG a good idea? If yes, what will you use and how will you mount it? If no, why is it a bad idea to use a light?

I have a 45 degree off-set rail mount I can put on the KSG rail and use for mounting the light.

There really isn't a single answer that's a definitive one, where it comes to things like whether or not one should paint (glow or otherwise) their sights, use/install night-sights, use a stand-alone or weapon-mounted white-light, etc.

There's always pros and cons, and while any artificial construct (i.e. "drill" in a shooting class) may highlight the strengths or downplay the weaknesses of each of these tools and their associated techniques/tactics, the truth of the matter is that there will always be other situations where the exact opposite may happen (highlighting the weakness or burying the advantages).

If you have the ability to do so, get out there and get some quality instruction from a few different instructors/schools so that you can see what you prefer.

I prefer the lantern battery type, which can be placed on the floor/ground to light up a larger area, allowing me to step away out of the limelight with a lighter less clunky firearm to boot, if in fact any such scenario ever presents itself:

Adding lights to firearms is just silly to me; like tracer rounds and IR illuminators, there's nothing like announcing your position. 'Just another reason to waste money. I mean honestly  unless you're on a crack hit squad up against Predator on a movie set, under most scenarios, how often do you think it's actually going to get used, other than helping you find your way back to the cabin after dusk arrives, or helping you avoid stepping on your childrens toys as you stumble along with your new decked out KSG on the way from your bedroom to the bathroom at 3am to take a leak? I mean you gotta' justify spending the $330+ somehow on that "SureFire Scout Light w/M600V LED Weapon Light with White & IR Output" you got off'a A-m-a-z-o-n, right?

The K.I.S.S. principle comes to mind here...

Personally, I'd find the $$ better spent on something more useful and tangible, like ammo, and save the movie props for the real bad arses, like you know, those guys with the dark glasses and beards, known as "operators" ;)

(tongue planted firmly in cheek)

For any kind of serious use a light is a must on a long gun. I use mine for work and it has a Inforce WML mounted on a 45* mount. The combination works nicely and adds little bulk or weight.

Don't forget to get some good training to use it property too. That will take care of all the possible negatives to having a light.

It takes 2 hands to work a pump shotgun. You don't have a third one for a light.

A coyote is attacking your 2 dogs.
Shoot the coyote in this picture and don't hit your dogs:

Actually, I have a Streamlight TRL-3 that I'm not using and is out getting upgraded to the newer 125 lumens. It should fit on the lower rail nicely in front of the grip.

Good idea. Shotguns that live in the 'real world' and not just on the range need one.
For me it is a 'utility' weapon. Daylight or dark, it can fix any problem;).

I'll be using the TLR-3 that I'm currently not using. I sent it back to Streamlight to upgrade to the newer 125 lumen output from the old 90 lumen. It's a small pistol light that will fit on the forearm just in front of the hand grip. The switch can easily be operated by the hand on the forearm. It's small, compact and will add negligible weight to the gun. It's also bright enough to easily blind a person.

Is Streamlight charging you for the upgrade? I might be interested...

No cost. I asked and I was told, at first, I would have to buy a new unit as an upgrade was not available. I told the rep that wasn't happening. She offered to upgrade my unit by just sending me a new one. It should ship out tomorrow.
