Old guy came by my table at the show wanting to swap/sell this gun with a Fiefield 2.5X10X40 illuminated scope/laser combo. He also had a plain 3X9X32 Simmons scope. He wanted a swap on a rifle I had. Swap the whole mess for it. I asked about the Remington Model 770 cause I had heard that quality control on the guns was hit & miss. He claims he had never fired it. Same thing for his son who had given it to him for another gun. The "I have never fired it is a blanket exuse at the shows. If ya never fired it, ya can't really say there is nothing whrong with it. Right?

Anyway, zi wanted the Firefield for my DPMS AR. Told him I was not going to risk that much on a possble lemon. He had to come up with some boot. He did, so I am only into the whole mess for less than 2 bills on the swap.

As I expected, the Remington was a miss in the quality control department. So it was a Lemongton wanting some TLC. First thing was it would not chamber a round after a put a nice camo pattern scope on it that I had been saving for just such a gun. Thought maybe a short chamber or short leade? Nah, not Remington. I had to force the bolt cause it was stiff to turn and everythnig was dry, no lube.

Bore sighted the gun with my Bushnell tool and went out back to shoot it. Fired one and it was just 3" low and 2" to the left at 200 yards. O.k. enough. Went to extract a round and the bolt locked up about half way out. The lowest bolt lug was hanging up on the tip of the next round in the detachable mag. Pulled the bolt and the mag. Pinched the sides of the mag till the bllets looked "right." Ran a few live ones and it worked o.k. A couple of more rounds went into the same area on the target. O.K. for now fine tuen later.

Next problem that showed up was that the ejection was sporadic. It always extractedd, but did not alsways eject. I would have to dump the fired cases out of the gun. Only way it would work to eject all the time was to turn the gun on it's side to the right or point the barel up as you cycles the bolt. The bolt has a spring loaded ejector like my 700 Remingtons, so It should work well. However, it may have some burrs on the bolt face/recess. Will be checking for that this Friday. Anyway, it is serviceable as it is.

Tje Re, 770s sell at Wally Worlds around her for 369+ including a scope. The Remmy 700s are only 377. I would pay the few extra bucks if buying a new rifle. the 700s are much better.

I received a Remington 770 in .308 for Christmas a few years ago and I must have gotten a good one as I have had zero problems with it. Is it a high quality, 1000 yard, bench rest type rifle? No, but it is capable of shooting better groups than I am at 100 yards. My only complaint is that the bolt is sloppy. It has some wiggle to it once it is unlocked and if you don't draw it straight back it will hang on the side and be difficult to pull all the way back. It's easy to pull straight though. Overall I'd much rather the 700 but as a gift, and I think they got it on sale for $259, it's alright.

Tknkered with the bolt head on this gun. Checked for burrs etc. Nothing unusal. I did find the front of he ejection port had rough edges. I moothed hem out and went out back to fire the rifle. Loaded rounds ejected perfectly now, but the empty cases still had some trouble clearing the ejection port. Still have more to do. It is much better now and reasonably accurate too.
