Heyy everyone, I am a new member here and also the new owner of Kel-Tec KSG. I just wonder about the weight of the shells for KSG, at least how much should it weigh? I've shot 36 grams buckshot, 34 slugs and buckshot, birdshot 28 grain. can you reply with the weight in grams?

There's no standard on how much shotgun shells should weigh, or how much the shot load should weigh.
Each type of shell depends on what the manufacturer loaded it with.
Usually the weight of the shot or slug is listed on the box.

The KSG can shoot any commercially available shotgun shells in bird shot, buckshot, or slugs up to the 3 inch Magnum types and down to the 1 3/4 inch Mini-shells.

For home defense I wouldn't feel at all undergunned with either of these below. Check the payload weight. If perpetrators of crime were as tough as bear or lions they might be a problem with the short ammo but they pretty much aren't. There's always another shot or 12 to be dished out too. Whatever it takes.

That's not to say your particular KSG will handle them. If you can get short shells they have advantages, but test, test, test for 100% function. I liked them in my KS7, unfortunately for whatever reason, me or the gun, they weren't reliable.

My go-to HD ammo for my KSG is Federal Tactical Flite Control #1 Buck, which has been discontinued unfortunately (I bought a bunch). I'm convinced the #1 Buck is the right combination of pellet size and number of pellets. Really like the reduced recoil Federal Tactical as well.

The OP mentioned 10 yards being the max, which makes sense unless you live in a huge, fairly open mansion. I've posted these before, but I'll post again my pattern testing of my KSG with my chosen ammo. It's pretty eye-opening.

Likewise, for the same reasons.

Like virtually all modern shotguns, the Kel-Tec barrels are made to allow use of steel shot.
Any shotgun can shoot lead buckshot, birdshot, and standard slugs in a barrel with up to a Full choke.

Older shotguns made prior to the 1980's were not suitable for steel shot since the softer steel barrel would be quickly damaged.
After steel shot was mandated in the USA for waterfowl hunting, shotgun barrels began to be made from harder steel to resist the abrasion.

So, you can shoot virtually any commercially available shotgun ammo in a Kel-Tec.

I will offer a different option, which I think should be considered by those who live in apartments, duplexes, or condos that share interior walls with the unit next door. Hevi-Shot, a shotgun ammo outfit out of Sweet Home, Oregon, makes (or perhaps made) a heavier-than-lead 2 3/4" 12-gauge T-shot round that contains one full ounce of pellets. The box says, "These pellets are Heavier Than Lead. This ammunition maintains downrange energy, resists cross-wind effects, and delivers devastating lethality. HEVI-SHOT shells create a remarkably tighter pattern and group." One ounce of harder and denser than lead .20 caliber shot in a tight pattern.

For comparison purposes, T-shot is .20 caliber, #4 buck is .24 caliber, #1 buck is .30 caliber, 00 buck is .33 caliber, and 000 buck is .36 caliber.

Another consideration is to load the HD shotgun with progressively heaver rounds - one or two T-shot or #4 buck rounds followed by heavier buckshot rounds. The idea being to defeat the threat with a lower penetration round if possible, but with heavier rounds in the magazine for use if necessary.

I could not find the Hevi-Shot rounds mentioned above in post #36 on the company's web site, but I found something more powerful. Hevi-Shot makes a "Dead Coyote" round that packs 1.5 ounces of tungsten T-shot into a 3-inch shell. Muzzle velocity is 1,300 ft/sec. It is astoundingly expensive but if used only in the event of a true home defense situation, it would certainly be worth it.

Tungsten is 1.74 times heavier than lead, and can be as much as ten times harder than steel.

good, i live in Georgia (the country) and now there are some rumors that government is trying to prohibit lead shells for water-hunting birds like duck and etc. So in Europe it is prohibited lead for the birds like ducks or guess. Georgia is flourished with Turkish made shot-guns due to theblower price and some shotguns imported from Turkey are unable to consume steel shells... this is another hadeache for my firends. thanks KSG i will sleep well after ! 🤟♥🇬🇪
