Is there a DIY process I can use to "blacken" bare steel? I bought a barrel clamp rail from YHM and had it modified at a machine shop. The cutting, of course, revealed untreated steel. I would like to restore a black finish on the clamp which resembles the factory phosphate treatment.

One way:
Bead or sand blast, followed by Brownell's Oxpho-Blue cold blue.

If one can boil water, one can PARKERIZE.

I cut the original GI sight on my A3 gas block/sight down to a minimal Gasblock only and parkerized. The piece looks like it was finished with the barrel and other Fe parts.

Anyone can parkerize from a number of online kits. Very reasonable, very easy, BUT DO THIS OUTSIDE. A Coleman type gas stove that will boil water is all you need and a Stainless pot.
