Hey y'all,

Picked up a sub 2k gen 2 in 9mm a couple weeks ago from our local Academy, finally took it out to the range today.

Didn't notice anything abnormal besides the gun shooting to the right quite a bit (a quick sight adjustment took care of this), I was really impressed with the accuracy at 30 yards, honestly.

I did notice however that it is insanely hard to breathe without getting a breathful of powder smell, especially during rapid fire. Our range has some pretty decent ventilation as I've shot pistols there before, but obviously did not compensate for the overpowering smell, especially out of that nasty 124 grain aguila ammo. Obviously if your face is a couple inches from the receiver (vs a foot or so in front of you with a pistol), you're gonna be breathing in a lot more smoke.

Does anyone have any tricks to combat this? I'll be shooting winchester white box from now on since the smell aint as bad, but I may have to stick to outdoor ranges if I can't figure out

Find a better range?

OSHA, IIRC, has stringent regs on firing ranges that require positive airflow
from behind the firing line, towards the impact area.

The breech on a shoulder fired weapon is obviously closer to your schnozzle (than a handgun), but your situation sounds unacceptable...and unhealthy.

Edit: Add link to NIOSH comments.

If another range is not an option, buy one of those battery operated fans with a mount that will allow you to place it on the divider, or bench, behind and to the right of you.

Thanks for the replies, I'll see what's up with their ventilation next time I visit. It is a range that has one of the pay-as-you-go time card things, so if they can't help me get some proper air flow going and i'm sitting there choking again, i'll probably just walk after 10 minutes.

Battery operated fan seems like a pretty solid idea if all else fails, I know they sell ones with clips on them - could probably clip it to the back side of the lane divider and blow it towards downrange if I had to.

Some ammo isn't fit to be shot indoors. Mostly, the bottom shelf foreign stuff can be horrid.
Never shot any Aguila brand ammo before, but I wanted to have a box of 124 grain on hand just in case the 115 gave me any issues (read about stovepiping during the break-in period on the sub 2ks with 115 grain). That was the only non-defensive 124 grain ammo our local Academy had in stock. It was very stinky stuff, had to hold my breath half the time I shot it.

Yes agreed, sounds like poor airflow at that range...... Probably a good thing to bring up to the R.O. onsite possibly..... Some facilities are set up better than others. Most problems like that can be rectified by increased PM and replacing filters....

I would find another place to shoot, if those conditions persist, for your health's sake...

Spray your favorite cologne on the bullets before loading them.

In all seriousness though, you bought a new gen 2 sub 2k from Academy Sports? Oh boy, I'll have to be on the lookout now.
Someone put out a heads up on texasguntrader not too long ago that a bunch of Academy's had them in stock. Called up my local one and sure enough, they had one. KT must've just fulfilled a large order with them, as cabelas and bass pro had them as well, but now everyone is fresh out of stock.

There's a reason the sub 2k is the best selling semi auto rifle on gunbroker...

Most 'budget' overseas pistol ammo isn't as clean as USA made. Try Perfecta or American Eagle if the smell is an issue. I shoot at several indoor ranges with 'state of the art' ventilation systems and none of them move air fast enough to push that smell away. But I don't mind it cause it reminds me I'm having fun and not working...and no pistol ammo smells as bad as surplus 5.45x39 (7N6)...
