Hey all,

I am new to owning a larger caliber long range rifle. All of my collection has really been focused on anything under 300m.

I am looking for a nice piece of glass to put on my new hunter. Something effective to the maximum potential of the weapon. I realize this is new territory for me and will require significant training. My buddy has property that i can practice 1000m+.

I am looking to stay ~1000$. I usually have stayed with nikon for my other platforms, but not sure that is the best option for this gun.

Thoughts?

There is perhaps no firearm for which a greater selection of optics are plausible than the RFB. The most popular solution IMO is an illuminated variable magnification optic with a low end below 2x and a high end above 4x.

Ok, you'll probably want more than 8x magnification at that range. Will you be doing any shorter range shooting? For a given price you can get much better glass in fixed power vs variable.

My impression is that the RFB isn't the most accurate rifle out there, an LR308 would probably be the best choice for a semiauto 308, but I imagine you'll be able to keep most shots on a torso.

Yes agreed. I do have the 24" hunter - with KT Muzzlebreak.

Most of my shooting will be under 300 yards but would like to extend it out for the challenge and fun - something new to get into. If it doesnt make sense to do that and im better off getting a bolt action or something for the price of a high end variable scope... then maybe i should re-think.

I like that SWFA scope, that and a ADM mount would be a good combination for under $1K... I use an ADM Recon-S with a leupold on my 18" RFB. The ADM is one of the nicest mounts I have ever used.

One thing you will be interested in if planning on shooting long range is an angled rail. This allows you to make the most of your windage adjustment at range. As you reach the maximum elevation adjustment you loose windage adjustment in a scope, just when you need it the most at long range. The angled rail will put you back into the mid range of the elevation adjustment(20MOA =80 clicks on a 1/4 minute scope). The problem with adding 20 or 40 MOA on a rifle that already has a rail, is that you would need to stack the angled rail on top of the existing rail then add your mount/rings. ADM solves this issue by offering the Recon-S with either 20MOA or 40MOA built in so it makes for a slick plug and play option for long range shooting. Here is a link to the 20MOA.

I have a couple of SWFA scopes, and their headquarters is only about a 45 minute drive from my house in Midlothian, TX. I find them to be excellent optics and a great deal considering the quality-to-value. However, neither of my scopes (3-9x42 HD, 10x42) are made in U.S.A.

As far as mounts, I highly recommend the LaRue QD LT104.
