A lawsuit might get the guy a little compensation, but I doubt very much. Aren't most government folks somewhat immune or limited in what they can be sued for (or the compensation amounts are capped maybe)? This initially appears to be blatant stupidity rather than malice, and that also goes against the guy getting much in the way of compensation.
