Well, I first had a SU-16B in about 2005 because it was acceptable under California's draconian laws. I loved it, but sadly let a friend of mine talk me out of it in 2007. I left California for 4 years, then bought another B model when I returned in 2011.
I was as happy with it as the original, but found that with "Off List Lowers," and "featureless builds" I could have AR15s and AKs in California, so I only kept it for a year or so, and stupidly sold it.
Well the legislators closed the loopholes and are requiring AR15s and AKs for the most part to be registered as assault rifles effective 1-1-2017. M1 Carbines, Mini-14s, and Kel Tech SU-16s, however, are exempt from registration.
I am going to register my two ARs (a retro USAF 604 20" rifle clone and a retro 653 16" Carbine), and my PTR91 .308 HK G3 clone as Assault rifles. Because you are very limited as to what you can do and where you can go with RAWs (registered Assault Weapons), and you can not pass them down to your kids or grandkids if they live in California, I want several good weapons that don't need to be registered. I don't want my home defense weapon to be a RAW. That would probably have political implications if I had to use it.
My 6 digit WW2 M1 carbine is safe, and I may even return the Saiga that I converted to an AKM, back to sporter so I don't need to register it. I still want a 5.56 semi-auto, and don't trust running an AR "California Featureless" since i think they will close that loophole too.
SO, I just bought a NIB Kel Tech SU-16B off Gunbroker for $499! I can use my numerous M16 mags I accumulated in 7 years military and 22 years as an LEO in the Kel Tech. While the new California Law bans all magazines over 10 rounds, no matter when you got them, retired and active LEOs are exempt.
Is it fair? Heck no, I think everyone should be able to have them. Do I think I am special? Heck no, just lucky. At least being permanently disabled in the line of duty and forced out on retirement earned me something other than a 50% pension. While I do feel badly for my friends and all other shooters who are not LEO, I am not getting rid of my high caps in solidarity.
