I keep reading topics that mention Gen 1 p32's. Are Gen 1 generally accepted as better? What's the difference between generations? And how many generations are there?

2 generations of the P3AT and P32 were made. The major change was in the bar stock they made the slide from. Gen 1 was formed from hex shaped steel, 2nd gen from square.

1st gen has an extractor like a P11, with an extractor arm and springs.

Check this link out....remember, the changes are just about the same between the P32 and P3AT. A lot of us think the 1st gen is better looking and more reliable.

As noted, the primary changes between Gen 1 and Gen 2 are in the design/configuration of the slide. Many of us think the Gen 1 slide is just more "attractive" and less blocky than the Gen 2 slide. Also, the Gen 2 adopted the PF-9 style of extractor. I don't know whether the Gen 1 is better/more reliable than the Gen 2 P3AT, but my Gen 1 has functioned perfectly for a number of years now. These days I "baby" it (meaning don't shoot it a lot, just enough to verify its function now and then) since it is basically not replaceable even though under lifetime warranty (Kel Tec just doesn't have the older parts anymore) and I want to keep it running for a long time.

Here are 2 photos of my P32 1st generation. One photo shows its wedge shape top which makes it easier than the generation 2 to aim in low light situations (point-n-shoot). The side view shows the carry chrome clip, heavy duty extractor, and bicycle tire grip pad. This weapon has got to be about the easiest to carry. Cor Bon JH is in the chamber and on top of the magazine - the rest are FMJ.

My wife has a Gen 1 P32 and my daughter has a Gen 2. I have shot and carried both of them and they are both very reliable and reasonably accurate. I can't say one is definitely better than the other. I prefer the looks of the Gen 1 because of the difference in the shape of the slide even though the Gen 2 is a hard chrome version and the Gen 1 is parkerized. That being said, I would not and do not hesitate to recommend either one. Just be an opportunist and when you find one at a great price buy it. You won't regret it either way!

If you are one wishing to shoot your P32 often - don't. Just verify the function of the tool now & then. 32 caliber ammo is too costly and it's useful range is not a real challenge. Target shooting a 9 mm is the thing to do. The P32 is a carry gun that simply works every time you pull the trigger. Knock down only means something when you shoot once or twice. When you carry a 32, you may have to shoot until the threat is stopped. You have 7 or more opportunities. That's a dose of buckshot going that-a way.
