Have had my blued PF9 since Christmas and just sitting in my holster @ home (since I don't have my ccp yet) has surface rust. I live in Florida and just found out about JimmyJonsGuns for cerakote but had been planning on Electroless nickel, any input on what will hold up on an edc for me in South Florida would be greatly appreciated.

Any experience as to how it will hold up?? I'm pretty careful with my items and maintain them like new so that wouldn't be a problem. I'm just not sold on having it nickel plated and being super shiny but I've also heard holster will wear down cerakote or it can chip.

I have a few blued guns, some of them for years, and no surface rust, even with carrying them, and I'm in FL too. That seems odd to me.

I'd probably go Cerakote just because of the color pattern options. I wanted a hard chrome PF-9 but couldn't find one that wasn't at a ridiculous price, so I went with blue/black. If I'm going to sink more money into this thing, might as well go full custom and get a unique pattern or color combo.

Yeah I keep it cleaned and oiled and haven't worn it out yet but just being in my Remora holster at the nightstand it had light surface rust, I was as shocked as you since it was bought new in Dec. so I figured if it rusts in the nightstand I'd better get it a better finish if I'm going to edc it IWB sweating my ass off down in Miami.

I've CC'd my cerakoted P3AT for at least 7 years now, and there are no significant wear marks or anything like that from the holsters I've used. It's pretty tough stuff, and has the added benefit of being (at least partially) self lubricating, so the slide is much smoother to operate than it was before I had it coated. Plus with the various colors available it just looks cooler :)

I have had sand water and mud on and in mine. I had to replace the guide rod twice from sand deforming the smooth surface, and I have a few light, I want to say surface scratching from the sand on the inside of my slide but there is no metal exposed. Cerakote is rugged and idiot approved. My thought is where as the nickel would tarnish and discolor if not kept right. The cerakote on the other hand does not need so much care.

I have several pistols nickel plated, they don't tarnish or discolor at all. Don't seem to wear even after a lot of rounds through the guns. I just do normal cleaning of them, nothing special needs to be done to keep them looking great.

Depends on your body chemistry. My PF9 is CPII plated. It's really good stuff but it has discolored and turned gray-black where it touches side, up on the rear left hand side of the slide.

I didn't think about it until after CCR had cleaned and returned the slide to me for "repair" from the unexpected "wear" but as a young'un I had problems carrying nickels (the coin) in my pocket. They'd discolor and I think I had a mild nickle allergy at the time. :(

That said, I think I prefer the nickel plating.

How do they hold up in a holster?
Everything wears eventually, of course. But nickle is hard and wears pretty slowly. My nickled PF9 never showed any considerable holster wear and I carried it quite a bit. Though, as noted above, there was some discoloration.

BTW, this is a thread from 2013, 10 years ago, so you might see "limited participation."

Thank you sooo much for replying. I have guns but never owned a nickel one. I have a Glock 20 gen 4 that's at my local Gunsmithing shop and they will be sending it off to have the slide, aftermarket trigger and magwell high shined nickel. I always wanted a gun with that look to it. I plan on getting a leather holster for it because I'm assuming that will help the finish hold up better. I baby my guns and I'll try to do regular maintenance to keep her looking good and shiny. Can you recommend a holster? Leather, Kydex? I seen that this thread was pretty old and I gave it a 5% chance that you would see it. Thanks again.

The only reason to nickle a glock slide is for cosmetic value, which I totally get. It looks cool. But the nitro-carb. treating glock (and most manufacturers now) uses does as good or better at preventing rust and wear.

I love leather but I believe Kydex is usually a superior option. It is, imo, easier to make a leather holster "comfortable" to wear (particularly IWB) but a talented Kydex maker can swing it. It just costs more than the vanilla fleebay offerings.

How long did you have it before it started to discolor?
It's been years since but my recollection is a couple weeks of carry. I think it was my skin acids discoloring the surface more than actual wear or damage.
