Hey Folks,

First post here.....have mercy!

Picked up a new Gen 1 in .40 Beretta this week. In cycling the action, the bolt doesn't want to fully close. I pull back the handle and try to let it snap forward, and the bolt gets hung up after closing down about half of the ejection port. It fails to fully close the ejection port. If i then pull the handle back about half way and let it snap back forward--and if I do this 4 or 5 times--it will sometimes slam closed.

This only happens for me with the safety off. When the safety is engaged, it fully closes no problem, every time.

I field stripped and lubed her up the other night (had to use the screwdriver trick), and it didn't really help.

I haven't seen any threads where the closure problem was so clearly correlated to the position of the safety.

I haven't shot it yet, but I am worried that it is going to FTF non-stop right now because of this issue. Any words to the wise?

thanks.

New or used? It sounds like someone has had it apart and didn't orient the safety properly when they put it back together.

I wasn't sure because you said Gen 1 and I was under the impression they no longer make those. Call Kel-tec on Monday and get it in to them. And this is a first for us. The safety should have absolutely nothing to do with whether the bolt cycles or not. Magazine in or out?

And maybe try to see if it will shoot?

Yeah....its going to have to go back. Problem occurs with mag in or out.

I pulled it out this morning to take a look again....not only would the bolt NOT close, but this time after another 4 or 5 attempts, the bolt got stuck in the "half closed" position. So now it won't close down and I can't pull it back. I pulled the buffer off and tried to get the bolt out, but it is fully stuck.

I got this from a local shop in North Jersey, and he told me he has only seen a single Gen 2 come through the door since they started production on them. Earlier this summer, he said was shipped a small lot of the Gen 1's...i got the impression he got 3-5 of them, and mine was the last he had. That is really all the info I have on the production.

Super frustrating to have to send this thing back without a single round going through it. My plan of building out a nice little bug out bag for election season shenanigans is up in smoke. Good thing I got a 10/22 takedown at the same time :)

Thanks for the help. I'll report back on what shakes out.

Ok...thanks for all the help, guys. I wanted to circle back with a little update.

When I last posted a week ago, the bolt was frozen in the position where half the ejection port was closed down (see above). I tried one last surgery on it before sending it back to KT. I managed to use a screw driver and get the bolt out, and when it came out it looked like there were some filings on it. Cleaned it all up, lubed it up, put it back together. Low and behold, for the first time since I got the gun, the bolt would close! This was my 3rd time stripping it, so I guess the 3rd time is the charm.

I got it out to the range this evening. It felt good, but it failed to eject about 1.5 times per mag, and this happened on both the 10 round factory mag that came with it, and also on the 15 round Mec Gar mags. Put about 100 rounds through it tonight. A guy working the range said he had one, and had alot of FTE's until he got about 500 rounds or so through it. Is that pretty consistent with other's experiences?

I'm trying to figure out if the FTE issue is related to the odd issue I had a week ago, or if it just needs to break in more.

Thanks!

Also....here's a picture of one round I put through it last night. A few people at the range who had some experience with subs said they hadn't seen that type of failure before. Not sure if this sheds any more light on things, specifically on my overarching question of whether this is "normal" or if I should be thinking about sending her back.

thanks.
