Hi all!

I just joined the site the other day and have already found so much helpful information for my recent purchase of an SU-16A.

Currently, I only have the AR stock adapter on it and one of the tri-rails that bolt onto the barrel with Magpul's MBUS front sight on it and rear MBUS on the top rail. When I bought the gun, the front sight post was already removed. I've got the compact forend on order now and it should be here in a week.

I was wondering though (and I've searched the forum and Google to see if it's been posted anywhere before, but could not find anything) if anyones tried to modify an AK variant forend for an SU-16?

I'd really love to have a continuous top rail to keep my MBUSs on the same plane. That's my only gripe about the bolt on tri-rail is that it's about 3/16" shorter than my top rail.

Thanks guys!

Midwest Industries has a handguard that is made for the PLR-16. (Hope I link it right).
Its the same as their AK handguards other than that the PLR-16 version comes with a barrel shim so that the top rail will plain with the receiver body rail. This will work with the SU-16 but you have to grind down the bottom of the barrel shim to get it to work correctly, because the barrel diameter on the PLR is 0.625" and the barrel on the SU-16 is 0.750 at the mount position, at least on the SU-16A. I did this with mine and it worked fine, I`ll post some pics of it at some point.

Midwest also makes several AK varient handguards, standard AK, Krinkov(which is shorter), and the Galil/Golani(Israeli AK). The standard AK handguard even has different colors available also. Troy at Midwest said that they are all about the same so if you call them you might be able to get the shim with which ever handguard you want. Its worth a try anyway.

If the link below doesn`t work, just Google Midwest Indutries.

I just got a Kel-Tec compact forend a couple months ago (they were out of stock for, ah, forever!) and would buy a drop-in-fit handguard from MI in a heartbeat. The Red Lion is nice but just seems kind of minimalist. I own some MI accessories and they're all very high quality. Not sure I'd want to take a Dremel to a $125 part just to make it fit to a gun it's not designed for. Heaven knows I've done it enough to parts that were supposed to fit!

hi hong kong

it was a belt sander and I only used it on the barrel shim it was no problem at all. But that said it would have been nice if I didn`t need to but it was worth it.

Now they only need to make one that is directly for the SU-16A-CA one that is a little longer so it flushes up to the reciever body. I`d say 10" inches or so would be perfect. I`d pay some where in the ball park of $180.00, and offer all the colors SU-16 came in.

Sure thing jonnygun, but first I want to worn you a little bit here, you do have to modify (shave) to barrel spacer that comes with the kit as it is originaly built for the PLR-16.
I`ve started a seperate tread here. http://www.thektog.org/forum/showthread.php?t=225291. that discribes what I did.
But the hand guard comes with the lower partially assembled with the barrel saddle, just set the barrel in the lower portion of the handguard. Then the upper clamp goes on and bolts to the lower barrel saddle (gas tube removed of course). Then re-install the gas tube and then place upper half on top and just add the 4 screws to the upper half.

Of course I`ve made this simpler than it really is but check out the oither thread and if you have any other questions you can PM me. Or here, just as good.

which tri rail did you use to bolt on? and do the magpul sights zero ok? I am wanting to do the same thing.
I think it was the Leapers tri-rail. It's only about an inch long.

As far as the Magpul sight's go, they're really nice. The front sight post will have to be raised as high as it can go and then some to work properly, but, I am pleased with the results so far.

No, Troy is a little mistaken there is a barrel shim that needs to be ground down for it to work on the SU. And as far as colors, MI`s Ak forends do have 2 or3 differant colors but those parts don`t come with the same barrel shim as their PLR version.
Talk to Troy again about their Ak forends and see which one will fit a .750" barrel, which I think is the diminsion of the 16A, B, and CA where the forend would mount.
