I'm a little late posting a 2000 round report since I passed 2k a few range trips back and have definitely lost count since then. If I had to guess, I would estimate I'm in the 2500 neighborhood. I thought it would be useful to post about my experience because one of the common questions from newbies or prospective buyers is "What kind of reliability can I expect?" Here is my experience:
During my first range trip with this gun (almost 7 years ago), I had a few failures to feed. It's important to note that although I knew better, I shot the gun straight out of the box that first day, with no cleaning or lubing. After that initial trip, I did not experience another failure of any kind until around 600 rounds. My extractor had a small (nearly invisible) chip on the very tip. The gun would still cycle Gold Dots but wouldn't extract anything else. A call to Kel-tec and I had a new extractor and leaf spring in my mailbox a couple of days later. I installed the new extractor and secured the buttonhead screw with Blue Loctite, for good measure. Thousands of rounds later I have had zero malfunctions. So in other words, trouble free for 600 rounds, then a small hiccup that was easily corrected, and somewhere close to 2k since then without any issues.
The gun is for the most part stock. Early on, I polished the feedramp with 1000 grit sandpaper wrapped around a pencil eraser. I did this just for insurance but was having no issues after the initial range trip. At around 1500 rounds I called Kel-tec and asked if my round count warranted replacing anything. The guy said "Maybe it's time for recoil springs. I'll get those out to you." Other than those two minor tweaks (that I believe are immaterial to the success I've had), the gun is just as it was from the factory. I believe my experience is the norm for Kel-tec pistols. I had a P11 and a PF9 that were equally reliable. Kel-tecs just work.

My P3AT must feel neglected. I never fire over about 10 to 20 rounds out of it at a time since, at the most, I only carry 13 rounds total. So far I've never had a failure with it but again I never expect it to run through a box or more at a time like I might with my Glock 19. So as long as I can get 13 rounds out of it without jamming I'm a happy camper. However, it is good to know that it could fire a lot more at a time so thanks for the report.

You're welcome. Your use of the gun is definitely the norm and fits with the guns purpose (carried a lot/shot a little). I went through a stretch where mine was fulfilling multiple roles and I was putting 2 boxes through every other month or about 600/year. When I initially got it, there was lots of talk about breaking these guns in so I shot the bleep out of it that first year. Today, I have range toys and other self defense guns. The P3AT remains my "everywhere" gun because I can just toss it in a pocket and go. I did return to shooting a box or more at a time lately because I'm trying to master it well enough to shoot it as accurately as I do my wife's P32. I've gotta get rid of the P32 itch until I've got an extra $200 or so lying around.:)

P-3AT Reliability

It is good to hear the reliability of your 380 has been good. Very gratifying and your report was well written. Thanks for taking the time to make the report. I feel somewhat guilty because I have 2 P32's and one has as many rounds as your P-3AT with almost the same reliability. When I get some time I will post on it on the 32 Forum. I also have a P-11 which is so reliable it is scary but I still hate the trigger (and always will) - but it goes bang. My experience has been that Kel Tec's are a lot better than many folks give them credit for.

Regards,

My P11 was reliable as well, but like you I wasn't crazy about the trigger. My PF 9 was rock solid too. I no longer have either of them but both reached a 4-figure round count. My wife has the P32 and I love that thing. I don't notice a drastic difference in recoil between the P32 and P3AT but I do shoot the P32 better.

When I do shoot my P3AT at the range it is mostly just snap shooting one handed at the target while mostly just pointing the slide. My usual target is a 2 Liter pop bottle on a string at the 3 or 5 yard line. I keep a 36" heavy string tied in a loop in my range box to attach them with. Last range trip I saw 2 other bottles hanging out there. I asked the Range Officer Lady if people were copying my ******* reactive target and she said; "No, you take yours down when you're through."

I guess my P3AT at least 2000 trouble free rounds I shoot min of 1/2 box.
All 6 of my KelTecs started life same way . Out of box Oil slide and lets shoot 50 rounds. Then clean 1st time all 6 4 P-32 1 P3at and 1 PF_1 passed

I did a P-32 relieabilty test on 1st P32 I cleaned used auto grease on the slide rails . Loaded fired round in chamber and mag. Reloaded pocket carry no holster. Nothing else in pocket. 1 month Repeat and back to pocket. 6 months never cleaned or lubed . At end of test I took this mess apart Grease was hard and full of what looked like powder . Lint was in around hammer& trigger and down inside, Recoil spring also lint. Pistol was a mess . Yet never jammed or failed to fire . Still going strong today. That test showed me the KelTec can take more than we think .

As a retired LEO, I have many different types of handguns and used to carry a Glock 27 for daily off duty, for years. Last couple years at now 71 y.o. I am right handed but have joint problems in my hands and now carry my PF9 because of less recoil and it's lighter weight. Also when I want deep concealment, carry P32. I have always like KelTecs and never have had any problems with them and have several variants of KelTec pistols and rifles, no mods, all shoot very well and dependable.
