Last night I shot my KSG at an indoor range to see how the red-dot was sighted with my chosen load - Federal Tactical Low-recoil #1 Buck. I also shot some Winchester 1oz slugs for the heck of it. Up until now, I've only shot the KSG outside.
Holy crap, was it loud! The Federal Tactical were bad, but the Winchester slugs were really bad. I guess the Winchesters were the worst because the box says they're rated at 1600 fps. That's really moving for a 1oz projectile. This is significant to me because I bought the KSG as a home defense gun.
The moral of the story is that I'm going to acquire a high-quality set of electronic ear protection for use in the house. I've heard of others that do this and had already been considering it. The theory is that you put on the ears when grabbing your gun to deal with a potential issue. The electronic ears let you hear everything, but shut off momentarily at the loud shot. I would keep the ears right by the gun for quick access.
Is anyone already doing this?
