I put it on the digital scale and it’s 5 lbs 13 oz without the mag. So the S has definitely put on weight since Kel-Tec originally spec’ed it.
The barrel looks about right so I can only assume the production rail is heavier than the prototype and / or the heat shield.
I’ve never had a bullpup before so I’m not sure how I feel about it yet.
The rifle is so short without the butt extended, it’s hard for me to get a good sight picture and cheek weld.
It seems oddly heavy and solid. Maybe that’s because all the almost 6 pounds is very compact and evenly distributed?
The trigger is insanely crisp and pretty light. It has to be the best production trigger for a semi-auto rifle I’ve ever felt. I’m surprised every time by the release.
I will say that the iron sights definitely feel like backup sights, especially the front sight. I could see where smacking the front sight on something hard by accident might be a problem. It’s basically a giant leaf spring mechanism that allows the sight to fold up and down. My first thoughts are “I wonder how well they’ll hold zero.”
It would never replace an AR-15 role as robust military weapon, but I think it’s in the right niche as a survival gun. IMHO, it would handle home defense just fine. It’d also make a good car / truck gun.
Ok, I've been playing with it and I don't like how it feels. This is my first bullpup and I think I'd rather sell it as new and not shoot it. Anyone have any good experiences selling on the site here? Or should I just put it up on Gun Broker?
Bullpups definitely have a different feel to them. After shooting ARs and bolt guns, I finally bought my first bullpup a year ago. It is the K&M Arms M17S in 5.56. It had the oddest feeling to it with much of the weight balanced in the middle and to the rear. After practicing with it and learning the new ergonomics of it, it has become my favorite rifle. Stay with it for a while and you may end up loving yours too.
Why don’t you like it? I’ll agree that ergonomically they are a bit odd. However in practice they are not nearly as awkward as they seem. You might try shouldering it more like the Israelis train where the butt is shifted more into the pectoral rather than the armpit. And don’t try to compare to a ar15. It’s a whole diff animal.
Doh, you need 25 posts to put it up for sale here! So, my first issue is that I really wanted it to be 5lbs. It's almost 1lb overweight. Pencil Barrel ARs weigh in right around this. While I haven't shot it yet, I honestly don't like how it feels in my hand when I dry fire it, nor do I like the chamber being right under my head.
I'll see if someone on the ARFCOM Equipment Exchange will take it for what I paid for it.
Big Mat,
Wheres your front irons?
Is that flip peep a grip interference issue like that?
The TA is nice!
I love a Leupold FXII 1.5X20 on a AeroP mount. Same weight as as a TA33, about 9.3oz. 9" ER, $300. I love the FXII on my RDB. But it may get the TA if I can trust it again.
TMI,TOMA, I know.
Which can? I want to get one as well but something on the lighter side in terms of material if posdible, and maybe something modulat to keep it all fairly compact
I've got a Q Trash Panda which is fairly compact and light. I originally got it for my 300 blk, but it also came with a 5.56 adapter which I haven't placed on a host yet. It seems like this RDB-S would be a good choice to use it up on.
