This thing:
Transport Bumper Vehicle Train

Shoots flying insects dead with a pinch of salt.
I HATE flying insects!
First modifications:

Since mine isn't going to be around children EVER the auto-safety is a nuisance.
Whenever the gun is fired, the safety springs back into the "on" (safe) position.
Not good for quick follow-up shots because the safety isn't intuitive.
The most damning thing is, when the safety is released it cannot put back into the safe position without shooting it:mad:.
The only 2 mods I saw on You-Tube disabled the safety completely. We don't have to do that.
Perhaps it would be better if it worked like the safety on every other gun on the PLANET!
Easy to do. (this is not a step-by-step how-to).
A small magnetic phillips screwdriver is essential.
Remove the pump handgrip and all of the screws holding the right half on.
You'll see the pesky spring and the safety clicker-bar with its return spring:
Font Technology Auto part Electronic device Vehicle

Remove all of the safety parts so it looks like this:
Toy Vehicle Model car Plastic

If we put the safety back in, it will flop around so we make a fiber-washer out of thin cardboard to make it slightly "stiff":
Vehicle Wood

Metal

Ear Sea snail

Install the safety and tighten the screw until it moves a little stiff.
Reassemble the other parts leaving out only the clicker bar, it's return spring, and the "pesky spring":
Toy Model car Vehicle Plastic Auto part

I made the washer a little large so it can be seen in photos. It doesn't need to be this big:
Helmet Yellow Personal protective equipment

The safety will now work like ones on real guns.

One other thing bugged me (pun:D). The red nose for the muzzle is a loose fit and can move around and interfere with the shot stream:
Toy Lego Toy block Plastic Baby toys

So I opened it up with a 9/32" drill bit:
Toy Baby toys Play Plastic

I wanted to retain the red nose so some neanderthal (not LE), doesn't mistake it for something "real".

Next are the built-in batteries, laser, and pressure switch:eek::D.

Oh man... I came to this forum to learn more community feedback on a Kel-Tec rifle I bought, but there is some funny stuff here! Blake - do you think diatomaceous earth would be too powdery and weird to use? It absolutely wrecks bugs and gets in the crevices of their exoskeletons, is non-toxic to humans, and if another bug crosses through the residue it'll mess them up as well. Might be a fun load to take outside and shoot bugs around the perimeter of the house, with secondary benefits of damaging other bugs who find it later. Obviously it's easier to just dump it along the perimeter... but it sounds pretty fun to shoot some pests with a red dot!

Oh, Outstanding! Ammo with a chemical-weapons twist, I Liiiike it!
Not sure what it's density is but we can find out. The BAS uses mostly blunt-force impact to effect a 'kill' but this would be an interesting media to research. Especially for "big game" that are wearing armor.

It's certainly cheap and not nearly as abrasive as blast media.
Not sure how powdery it is but it has to get into the loader. The shaking of the gun when the pump is cycled gets table salt into the loader with no problem.

Test it and let us know!
(I just know you can't be going thru life with a flimsy fly-swatter when there is a 'gun alternative' available:D)

I was looking around and found a number of companies producing spherical ceramics with diameters in the 0.3-0.4mm range. I didn’t look at density... but that may solve the abrasion/leakage issues and should improve pattern (aerodynamics).

Could get slightly bigger beads if leakage is an issue (think buck shot) :)

Another good suggestion.
Need to compare it's density to that of table salt. The problem with the other ammo isn't so much leakage, the heavier (higher density) media is an abrasive and chews into and jams the soft plastic of the loader:

Yeah, but these people will think nothing of sending you a 'free sample' (a Kg, 2.2 lbs) for :quote:evaluation:quote:.
You just have to give them a really good address like:

Your Real Name, Process Engineer- New Products.
Genius Metal Solutions, Inc.
510 Anyway Drive, NE <your home address
Pittsburgh PA, 70612 <your home state
Attn: Prototype development laboratory.

Send 'em a few bux paypal and it will be on your front porch in no time.

(not that I've ever done anything like this, but it works really good:D)

Truly proving the point that there is someone out there to buy absolutely anything:rolleyes:.
I actually had the 3.0 out yesterday with the garnet media in it.
A red-wasp was 'bugging' me:wall:.
Blasted him and didn't take him down to the ground, but you could tell he wasn't going to go very far.
Long story short: problem solved.
A fly lit later and I bounced him his body off of the back door window 4-feet away.:drwho: just because I'm mean:D.

The fun way to kill bugs! I knocked a carpenter bee out of the air with my L&G, but had to go stomp it to finish it off. The most obvious injury was it messed up its wings.

I also have a Black Fly 3.0. I am a bit disappointed in it. Salt gets in the feed (that cylindrical orange thing in the hopper) and seizes it up because the clearance is too large. I've never had that problem with the 2.0 and the L&G. I took the 3.0 apart to clear it before I saw their troubleshooting video. This particular 3.0 was supposedly a beta, so they might have improved this. I use coarser salt in it, though it hurts the pattern. I may get another 3.0 to find out. If this is fixed, the non-self-engaging safety and improved trigger are worth it.

It seems like I use the plain ol' 2.0 the most. It's murder (literally and figuratively) on spiders. It also works on those long-legged house centipedes (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scutigera_coleoptrata).

I haven't seen any scorpions in my house this year...

I haven't even seen the Black Fly 3.0 before:wall:.
Nice to hear him call the safety on it a "cross-bolt-safety"
Green Black Yellow Facial expression Emoticon
. I think everybody wanted that.
And +1 on the BAS taking out the wings on any bug that flies. The sick part of me is perfectly happy condemning them to the status of 'walker' and not stepping on them:devil:.
A slow death for you mister!

The most important thing not to be lost: the good ol' 2.0 is still available for about the price of two boxes of shells for a regular gun:tu:.

p.s. I hope they get the 'bugs':D worked out of the new Black Fly model.

Hello all, I am a total random internet stranger here, and I know I am raising this thread from the dead. But hear me out.
I live somewhere in the states that is currently infested with spotted lantern flies (SLF), an invasive insect from South Korea. They are hearty and abundant, and difficult to eradicate, especially from a distance. I got a Bug-A-Salt 3.0 Black Fly to take them out, but the power for both kosher salt and coarse sea salt leaves much to be desired. Half the time it just makes them jump and fly away, their primary escape mechanism. And sure, I could stand closer than 3 feet, but in my dream of dreams I hope to clear some of the HUNDREDS on the eaves of my tall house.
This was the ONLY thread I found discussing real options to increase the power for this toy/tool. I found the discussion of higher density ammo and its effects on the plastic barrel well as plastic bearings to be pretty insightful. Tonight I tried black mustard seed. This is smaller then regular mustard seed, but regular should work too. Both are ideal because they are big enough to not get between into the works of the plastic (I hope). Current results are very promising, I will report back in the morning. I would be interested if others wanted to try this, or other hard, spherical, easily available, non-germinating seeds out.

Excellent first post & welcome to the forum SLFHunter.

Update to my previous post, the hoppers turned out to not be a problem. Seems they nibble on a leaf or three, say "yeech" & buzz on off somewhere else.
