Was thinking about mounting a Primary Arms CQB ACSS 2.5X on my RDB.
I shoot my ARs primarily 25 yards. My reasoning: the rifles I own are for defensive use. Also I shoot at local indoor ranges where the lanes are 25 yards max.
As I looked more into it the CQB and it’s philosophy of use it seems that, for my needs, it may be a little more than I need.

Am I mistaken?
Nope. Your right. If you can’t hit the target with iron sights at 25 yards, and that’s as far as you plan on shooting, then buy Ammo not optics.
Oh, I can hit the target with iron sights on my AR no problem. Just looking for something for quick target acquisition that is slightly better than a red dot but not a full-on scope. Plus I’m on the bubble about installing BUIS on the RDB.
If your looking at the ACSS 2.5X spend the same money on the PA 1-6 x 24 ACSS scope. The reticle is etched so no need for BUIS and the 1 power is pretty good. It reaches out further than the 2.5 fixed power and look really good on the rifle. If you use a link from the Mrgunsngear YouTube channel they throw in a free mount with purchase.
That dot is almost a pound at 15.5 oz.
You don't want a "full-on scope". Consider a not full-on scope.
The Leupold FXII 2.5x20 has more than enuf eye relief at 4-5" and feather weight at 9.6oz with a Aero P mount. Always on. Yes, its fast.
For me that would be too much magnification at 25 yards. I liked st381's advice to go with at 1-6x24. You could also look at something that starts at 1.25 or 1.5 power, but once it gets more than that, I feel it is a little too disorienting for quick target acquisition. I want something that can be turned way down, preferably to 1 power so it functions like a red dot.
And remember once you're eye's start going in your 40's you'll appreciate any help you've already got on a a rifle, just saying... but the red dot will perform in all the capacities you mentioned in the original post.

One of the best sights for CQB IS THE Holosun open reflex HS510c. 3 reticles to choose from in the sight including the sharp circle dot reticle, auto on off, 50,000 hour battery, solar powered, excellent viewing window, etc.
I put a PA 3X ACSS scope on my RFB and it is very nice, fairly quick to use in CQB situation but think i would rather have the HOLOSUN HS510G ACSS if i could exchange it easily.
I love how long this thread has gone on. I have Aimpoint's and acogs. Basically if you want the fastest sight with capability out to two hundred get a red dot. If you want a rugged etched reticle that will work without batteries and give better accuracy/identification past 100 yards get a prism sight. There is no one optic perfect at everything, but I can still run an acog pretty fast up close. I prefer the prism to the dot, but it takes practice. Then again, I'm not kicking down doors for a living, and even if the world ended I don't think that would be the majority of my use for an optic.
I've used both a red dot and a prism on my RDB. In the end I disliked the red dot and liked the prism. ACSS in 2.5/3x power is pretty excellent for having great close quarters ability with the large horseshoe, and lets steel ring at 300 just as easily. It's my go to.
Yup, I agree with the Holosun HS510 being an excellent choice and what I went with on my RDB. Crisp reticle, 3 options of what reticle you want to use (I would think the circle without the dot would be excellent for shotguns) shake-awake technology, great battery life and bright enough for outside use make it a winner in my book.
