After much deliberation, it has been decided that there will not be a Phideaux 2017 shoot this October.

The reason is to give the group (and our hosts!) some needed rest from an event that we don't want to turn into a "same old, same old" thing.

The hope is that there will be renewed enthusiasm, and more first-time attendees showing up, if we wait until 2018.

They say, "absence makes the heart grow fonder". I will definitely miss seeing you all this year, and will look forward to more Phideaux shoots in the future.

Jack Jr, grandson James and I only attended two Phideaux Shoots (1 and 2). Some health reasons precluded us from attending any more. We still talk about the experiences we had at the shoots, and the people we met. Thanks for the memories Jim and Brenda, and the unforgettable characters we met there.

Oh no! My sweetie will be upset. Told her this year we would take an extra day or to off and see the Area attractions. That big lake and parks look inviting. Well hats off to Jim and Brenda. Lot's of great memories and friends. I look forward to future shoots with my friends on KTOG.

Glad to hear all is well. I'll miss the gang and the activities. We all have something to look forward to in 2018. Good health to all of us, especially us seniors. ;) :D

Hi Jim. Don't feel bad about taking a break. Even though a short timer of only the last 3 years, I am on the fence this year. Still in the middle of renovations and construction at the ranch we bought in December. Probably won't move in until August at the earliest, and plenty of work afterwards.

I intend this to be my last move, so want to get it right.

I'm definitely going to miss the shoot. The last three have been the high points of my year. Thanks, Jim and Brenda, for your hospitality and all your efforts that go into making it a wonderful event.

On another note, there is some chance that I will be in the neighborhood the afternoon of August, 21. For at that time, a total solar eclipse will be visible. As it turns out, just about the best place along its path to observe it is only a few miles from Phideaux's farm. A significant portion of my life has taken place in cities and towns along the path of totality for this eclipse. Lincoln, NE: my post-doc studies, Paducah, KY: I played in their symphony orchestra for about 11 years, Nashville, TN: my home town, Hendersonville, TN: my childhood home, Gallatin, TN: my maternal grandfather's final home, and now, of course, Kuttawa, KY. I have never seen a total solar eclipse in person, and neither has my mother. This might be her last chance to see one. Although there is little mystery about them, and astronomers can predict when and where they'll be visible, centuries in advance, I understand that a total solar eclipse is one of the most profound experiences a human being can have. I intend to be somewhere on its path, where clear skies are expected, along with my mother and a select friend or two. We actually don't have to leave Nashville, and there are various colleges and other institutions that are planning viewings. If we go to one of these, I would like to stay away from the huge crowds, so the experience won't be ruined by idiots who just don't get it. Weather permitting, it will be visible from her condo with a duration of totality of just under two minutes, but driving about 35 miles north will give us about 40 more seconds of totality. Being midday and in summer, it's going to be really strange when it's suddenly dark. The wildlife will be quite confused, and it ought to be really eerie.

Rudy Burgers don't exist anymore.

I live about 2 miles from where the Rudy Burger used to be served. It was awesome.

This area is going nutzo about the eclipse....people renting their property to campers from all over,

Not me.

"“We put in a request with Kentucky Gov. Matt Bevin to have 85 National Guard military police, simply to assist with the immense amount of traffic that we anticipate,” said Brooke Jung, who has served as Hopkinsville’s full-time eclipse coordinator since September. “We probably get 50 calls about the eclipse a day, on average,” Jung said.

Hopkinsville began preparing for hordes of visitors about 10 years ago, when an eclipse chaser called the head of the Convention and Visitors Bureau to alert officials about the town’s designation. Since then, the community has enthusiastically embraced its role as eclipse central, even adopting the name “Eclipseville” and painting a mural on the building next to Whistlestop Donuts, an iconic spot next to the railroad tracks that most everyone sees when pulling into downtown. It is renting 15-by-15-foot viewing stations in local parks for $30, parking pass included."

There may be a shortage of porta-potties in Western Kentucky. (And there may be a surplus a week after the eclipse.)

Im dredding it, as we are over run all summer with tourist, and fishing tournaments...I can't imagine what its going to be like this August into Sept.
Traffic is already a big difference for us backwoods folks.

More than 1 car at a 4way stop is a disaster.

I really want to see the eclipse first hand, because I am (was) into astronomy about 15 years ago. But I really hate large crowds and traffic jams. The traffic going up I-25 from Denver to Wyoming will be horrendous for the eclipse. It's stop-n-go during a normal rush hour day, I can't imagine what it will be on eclipse day. So I'm torn on driving up there.

I expect to see a picture posted from you lucky folks in Kuttawa - maybe sitting out in lawn chairs on your fishing dock, sipping fancy drinks with little umbrellas in them, enjoying the blackout.

To keep the tourists off your property, just post a "Trespassers will be Shot" sign across your driveway entrance, and then go do some practice shooting on your range. Maybe the audible clues will keep them away.

I will try to get some pics from my back yard.

I'm sure some one will open a thread about it and we can add our pics and perspectives.

I did learn something this week...that the Sun is exactly 400 times the size of the moon,
But the sun is also 400 times farther away from earth as the moon.

Thats how the eclipse fits...

Hmmmm , what a coincidence huh?

Jim,
You could be sitting on a gold mine!

Gary
Since he's not going to have to do the October shoot, he should break out his "No Firearms Allowed" sign and cater to the yuppie hoard.
Several bottles of celebratory, limited-edition, "Eclipse-wine" (Boone's Farm:D) at $5 per cup, they'd suck it up
Green Black Yellow Facial expression Emoticon
. Tickets to the porta-john should be at least $1:rolleyes:.
That and 50 chairs at $10 a head would get another really nice gun
Yellow Font Smile
.
And unlike our crowd, they would all be gone before tomorrow

Yeah, well, the local gov officials are already warning everybody(********) about lawyers and ambulance chasers showing up to get their fake bucks off all the landowners around here..

They are warning everyone to be very careful about letting strangers on your property....they may , very well, end up owning it.

:gaah:
