It's a great argument for those of us in favor of hi-cap mags and it won't make sense to those who are against them.

But, at least, our opinions are being voiced!

Hi,

The article is well thought out, and I enjoyed reading it It's good to read a article like this, but often the experience is all too rare in today's media.

Best Regards:

There is a subtle anti gun message running through this piece, did anyone notice : Plus, there's a certain amount of condescension.

Quote:
Particularly in rural Arizona, given the upsurge in border violence, it's likely that residents feel the need to defend themselves against drug predators, coyote gunmen or others. Yes, they can use semiautomatic rifles and shotguns, protected by the Second Amendment and unlikely to be banned by local law, but women generally don't care to put in the training needed to master them. Nor can the elderly handle them adeptly
Note that rifles and shotguns are "protected by the Second Amendment" yet nothing is said about handguns, implying that they are NOT protected.

I'm over 60 and resent being told "the elderly can't handle them adeptly". I would make the argument that a 30 round mag in a Glock is harder to shoot accuarately than an M16 but that's me. Anyone look at qualifying scores of recruits, rifle versus pistol ? I think he's wrong

And if the 30 round mag makes the gun "awkward", then why would it be ideal for women and the elderly to use to protect themselves in the home?

I need to learn what the word "vitiate" means, maybe then I will be worthy of reading the Washington Post.

Just Sayin ...............

I've noticed a lot of folks are getting older these days and nobody is getting any younger it seems.

I wonder why that is?

I think you may be reading too much in between the lines. *It has taken me 2 years to convince my wife of 48 that she needs to go to the range with me on a more regular basis and become proficient with her handgun. *She has still expressed zero interest in learning how to fire a rifle or a shotgun. *I believe the author is trying to make the point that this is more common than most folks want to admit. *As far as the handgun reference he may be alluding to the fact that there are several US cities that do in fact ban handguns outside of the home, if not outright, within city limits, while allowing shotguns and "sporting" rifles. *Ugh.

The author of the article (Stephen Hunter) has written a very successful series of fictional books about a character named Bob Lee Swagger - aka Bob the Nailer - an ex-Marine Vietnam era sniper, and his adventures in the modern world. *You may be aware of one of these. *One of the books inspired the movie "Shooter" which came out a couple years ago. *At the bottom of the article it is noted he is the author of whatever the latest title is.

He is one of the last people I would worry about being in any way anti-gun. *And I believe he is well qualified as an elderly gent also.
