Now, I don't actually own an AR & my su-16 is still on order, but I am thinking that there is very little change to get that to work with a SU-16.
Gas tubes in ARs are a lot smaller than keltecs and the AR Free-floats have an attach point that the keltec doesn't.

Thanks correct! I think the AR's use a collar nut at the barrel/chamber area that attaches the forend, while not touching the barrel anywhere else. :'(

Correct. It replaces the standard barrel nut with an outside threaded one that the forearm threads onto. At least the YHM one I have does.

I have seen a picture of this one on a SU16, but durned if I can remember when or where. *This mounts to the integrated rail on your receiver, and makes no contact anywhere over the barrel. *But of course the price is prohibitive.

There are a couple of threads covering similar stuff over in the PLR-16 group; this one, for instance.

As much as I like the idea of a free-float rail/handguard system, I'm having a really hard time rationalizing putting a $200-$400 handguard on a $500-$600 rifle... * :-/ There's one vendor on Gunbroker.com who sells knock-offs of the Vltor-CASV and ARMS SIR system with a starting price of $50 and a 'buy it now' price of $120 or so. That's more in my comfort zone, price-wise - but I'm ambivalent about buying knockoffs...

Good catch P_S. *I was not aware the Chinese were making full on copies of these. *I would be wary of the mixed polymer/aluminum jobs, but this one looks like all aluminum. *

http://www.gunbroker.com/Auction/ViewItem.asp?Item=109685475

The only concern I have for these is whether the top rail is true flat over the full length, and the picatinny dimension sometimes leaves something to be desired. *Meaning if you are mounting a true picatinny acc on it, there may be some slack, or it may be too tight, requiring some fitting. *Minor issues for me, but might be major for some who are less inclined to do additional work. *If any of you have ever looked in the Sub Porn Pic thread, you'll see I don't have a problem with "fitting" things, but there's not much you can do about slack in a fit.

This one looks nice though. *

Well im not going to say dont get it because I would like you to try it out befor I do hardy har. But in all honesty they may use a diferent type of aluminum for one that may not be as strong and im sure vltor has a good method for bending there aluminum as well somthing they may not do here. anyways if you have to spend 150 for this one I would say get the vltor because 250 on youre gun is better than 125 in the john. As far as putting a 250+shiping into a 600 dollar gun well in this case i have no problem with it. Cant speak for every keltec but mine has served me well. I have heard a lot of comparison between the accuracy of the kelteck compaired to the 16" ars and they have all been pretty good and while I agree they are for two different jobs I would really like to see my for myself how well this gun can do (and piss off my ar loving freind) free floats are one option that alot of ar guys have had that I think would do well on a keltec (opinions welcomed). anyways i would be willing to pay for the vltor and the assurance of a good product and hopefully for a little bit more accuracy> Still have one question though if any body has tried this would I need to modify the Vltor i went through all the threads covering it and never got a real answer. I beleive it rests on the callar barrel nut of the ar but I dont think it really attatchesdoes anybody know the specs of the keltecs collar to ar comparison? :-/

First off I don't know alot about what sort of stress different plastics can handle.
That being said, it looks like if you attach one of these to the plastic rail on top of your keltec you'll be putting a lot of stress on that rail that it wasn't designed for, especially if you mount some sort of vertical grip on the forend and pull on it to steady yourself when firing rapidly.

I realize kel-tec has a VERY good warranty policy and if it does get damaged they might replace your whole reciever, but I'm more worried about what would happen if some sort of crack/break developed and you didn't notice it soon enough. Also it's possible you'll just tear up the rail.

It will definately look awesome and positively ooze evil black rifle, but will it hold up? And will kel-tec fix/replace your rifle if it doesn't?

That upper rail on the SU is a substantial piece of plastic, and several inches long. *The weight of an aluminum forearm would be negligible, and all of the types we have discussed have a fore and aft attachment point to spread the load. *So at least as far as that's concerned I don't think the weight would be an issue, *It does seem to me from handling Bam_Bam's that the SU16 is somewhat nose heavy due to the design, kind of like the Sub 200 is somewhat tail heavy due to the design. *I don't know how much weight you might want to add to the front of the SU as far as that goes, but a VFG would be minimal if you went with a polymer one.
