Default Rohm Rg .38 Special

Can anybody tell me about a Rohm police issued RG 38 Spezial (say's Made in Germany on the barrel) 4". I was given one by my Father in Law, and it is probably 30 years old and has never been fired. Not Once. Still new in box with papers. I have heard that Rohm's are crap, but would it be any different being a police issued gun? Any idea of value? And should I be afraid to shoot it (I have read some horror stories about Rohm revolvers)? Serial # is 0153xxx.

How do you know that it was police issued? The term "Police" was commonly attached to inexpensive revolvers in the past, sort of the way "tactical" is used today.
AFAIK, Rohm revolvers were inexpensive but adequate arms if you do not fire +P cartridges through them.
I'd shoot it with standard pressure practice ammo, say WWB (Winchester White Box) or similar.
I would think it would be worth $100 - $200. People collect all kinds of stuff. N.I.B. with papers might be worth more to somebody.

It was my Father in Law's uncle who was a cop and when he passed away (early 90's) they found four of these in his attic. So, I don't know for sure, but have to assume it was. It also has what my Father in Law says is a police handle, and it does look unique compared to pics of other Rohm .38 special 4"'s that I've seen.

p.s. - the box looks like it was printed in the 60's or early 70's

You have to look around to find many people saying much good about them. *However, I think some of the earlier models were ok. *Later, the RGs made in Florida were pretty much SNS. *I have a 22 that I actually bought new for $50 back in the 70's. *Loaded with ratshot, it's done a lot of tackle box duty. *I haven't shot it in years but it is/was actually a pretty accurate and very reliable shooter.

I have seen the 38 snubbies (RGs) at gunshows for about $100. *Rohm made a lot of guns. *It may be that your German, made-for-police pistol is of decent quality. *However, since he had 4 of them in the attic, I'm guessing this is just your garden variety Rhom revolver and nothing special. *If you google rhom revolver you'll get some hits. *Maybe you can find one like yours and learn more. *Here are a couple of threads on Rhom/RG 38s. *I'm not sure if they are identical to yours, but they are likely similar.

Thanks TxCajun. Does it matter that the paper work with it is in German, or that it is a 4", as opposed to a "snubbie"? My Father in Law said his Dad told him it had to be 30-40 years old, after all, he did know his brother.

Is there a model number on it?

Yes, there is a serial #, but it's in my safe and I have family over, and some are sleeping in my office where the gun is so I can't get it this minute. If I send you the number can you help? P.S. - I just got the gun today, but couldn't find a number on the gun (although I didn't look very hard) but there was a serial number on the box. I may have just missed the number on the gun.

Pass on whatever stamping is on the gun when you get a chance. I'll look around.

Hi Scott - That means what? I have 4 loaded guns in my other safe in my bedroom, and 1 under my pillow. You shouldn't have to worry about me waking anybody to find a gun in my "castle". Sleep Well.
